Fear Divides, But Courage Brings Us Together
I'm not going to lie. I am afraid. I'm deeply worried for my family, my community, and my country under the threat of another Trump, Republican, or MAGA presidency. Living in South Florida, I've seen the devastating consequences of their policies and rhetoric firsthand. I remember the heartbreak of over 3,000 children torn from their families under the cruelty of immigration policies. I've stood outside ICE Miramar, witnessing people who built lives here for decades facing deportation to countries they barely remember. The pain and fear in their eyes were undeniable.
I've looked into the heart of darkness after the mass shooting tragedy at Parkland, where children were slaughtered in their classrooms. While parents wept, lawmakers in Tallahassee giggled, stared at their phones, and dismissed their pleas for change. Their indifference felt like a betrayal not just of those families but of every American who believes in protecting our children.
I've smelled the stench of corruption as dead fish littered Florida's beaches, a grim reminder of environmental deregulation and greed. There was no way to stop the damage to our waters, communities, and livelihoods.
I've watched hatred grow, fueled by divisive rhetoric.
Returning citizens, encouraged to vote, were later arrested by Governor DeSantis for doing so, their hopes crushed by intimidation and deceit.
I've seen thousands of lives lost unnecessarily to a pandemic because lies about vaccinations spread faster than the truth. Friends and neighbors died because they trusted leaders who misled them.
I've watched my LGBTQIA+ and trans brothers and sisters come under relentless attack, targeted simply for being who they are. Books were banned, voices silenced, and rights eroded.
I've felt the sting of injustice as women and families were stripped of the right to make decisions about their bodies. The overturning of Roe v. Wade wasn't just a legal ruling—it was a declaration that our voices don't matter and that our autonomy can be taken away without a second thought.
I've witnessed what happens when fear, hatred, and greed drive the decisions of those in power. And I'm afraid of what more they could destroy. But I also know that courage is a choice. And now, more than ever, we must choose it.
Fear whispers doubts, highlights risks, and magnifies the unknown. But courage—courage is something deeper. It is a deliberate choice to move forward despite fear and act with conviction even when the path ahead is unclear. Courage requires not the absence of fear but the determination to confront it.
Courageous decisions are not always grand or dramatic.
It is the steady resolve to keep going, even when fear tells us to turn back. Each courageous act builds strength and resilience, proving to ourselves that we are more capable than we imagined.
Our choice today and every day is whether to stay silent and live in fear or choose courage and speak up and show up for everyone in our community to thrive.
Remember our values at People Power United: In this community, we will always speak out against racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, homophobia, misogyny, sexism, ageism, ableism, sizeism, transphobia, misogynoir, elitism, and bigotry! These are not just words; we must be willing to speak up and show up for everyone in our community to vote and thrive.
We can not let fear paralyze us. This act of choosing courage is what sets us apart. Choosing courage is the first step toward change. Together, we have the power to shape the future we deserve. Fear can only win if we let it. Let's courageously show the world what is possible when we stand united.
