Shout out to Defend Democracy Project for providing this update.
This past week, lawyers for former president Donald Trump failed to convince a federal appeals court âto stop former Vice President Mike Pence from testifying in front of a grand jury investigatingâ Trumpâs efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Pence âspent more than five hours behind closed doorsâ testifying in the case.Â
That same day, Trump âembraced a Jan. 6 defendantâ during a campaign stop, âcalling the woman, who served prison time for her actions during the Capitol attack⌠âterrific.ââ The woman said in a subsequent media interview last Friday that âPence and âevery singleâ member of Congress who certified the 2020 election should be executed.â
It was reported that a software company hired by Trumpâs campaign âto study election fraud claims in the weeks after the 2020 electionâ was subpoenaed earlier this year by the Justice Department. The founder of the firm said it âstudied more than a dozen voter fraud theories and allegations for Trumpâs campaignâ and âfound they were âall false.ââ Â
In Arizona, expelled state Rep. Liz Harris took to far-right media to call on supporters to push for her reinstatement, leading some supporters to show up at a âMaricopa County Board of Supervisors meeting to throw barbs at the board,â with âone of them even falsely accusing a Phoenix city councilman of opening the board meeting with a prayer to the devil.âÂ
In Florida, voting rights advocates filed a federal lawsuit arguing that the stateâs âvoter registration application does not properly inform voters about eligibility requirements,â specifically related to felons who have served their sentences. The lawsuit comes after Gov. Ron DeSantisâ draconian âelection policeâ launched âa crackdown against felons whoâd allegedly broken the law by casting a ballotâ last year. Â
Meanwhile, the Florida Senate âapproved a sweeping elections bill aimed at continuing Republican leadersâ efforts to crack down on voter registration groupsâ that âalso would shorten the time for voters to request mail-in ballots.â Opponents of the bill, which would increase rules and penalties for third-party voter registration groups, argue that it could negatively affect voter turnout.Â
Also this week, âfederal appeals court upheld a Florida election law⌠that a lower court had ruled was aimed at suppressing Black voters.â That law tightened ârules on mailed ballots, drop boxes and other popular election methods.âÂ
The North Carolina Supreme Court, âwith a new Republican majority elected last year,â overturned its âprevious ruling that found electoral maps drawn by Republican lawmakers were illegal because they were too partisan.â The decision was criticized for clearing the âway for partisan gerrymandering.â
