Equality vs. Equity
🗽Equality is leaving the door open for anyone who has the means to approach it; equity is ensuring there is a pathway to that door for those who need it. –Caroline Belden
Equality vs. Equity
To understand why affirmative action is needed, we must first understand what equity means. Many people complain about the lack of equality or equity, but they fail to zoom out and see the bigger picture.
I love this new graphic representation by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation because it visually shows the barriers that occur when striving for equality.
Equality: Everyone gets the same, regardless of whether it’s needed or suitable for them. In the photo above, we are leaving behind folks in wheelchairs or seniors with canes or walkers.
Equity: Everyone gets what they need while understanding the barriers, circumstances, and conditions.
People Power means we keep working to ensure equity in healthcare, education, housing, jobs, and more! We can’t and won’t stop advocating to provide our community members with what they need to thrive. Here are some people power actions we can take for equity:

I believe in the power of the people. I have seen the love and determination of folks stepping up to write letters and postcards to voters, signing petitions and letter campaigns, making calls, sending texts, hitting doors, and dropping literature. There is no power like that of the people, and People Power United stands ready to protect our communities against any and all injustices. - Laurie Woodward Garcia, People Power United
