Happy Labor Day

Happy Labor Day
Like every six year old, I thought my father was the coolest dad in the world.
My dad for some reason took me to work one day (this way before “take your child to work day”), and I had a rare chance to glimpse at his life as a lineman.
I remember we drove for quite awhile (out in the mountains of Eastern Washington) and eventually we stopped. He introduced me to his crew and showed me how to cook my lunch on a radiator, which I thought was the coolest thing, until I saw my dad and others scurry up a line pole to work. What an impression that left with me!
I saw him through the years go out to work in rain, lightning, blizzards, and every possible weather condition and come home with stories of critters, armed farmers, and his life with his crew. He taught me the value of hard work and what it meant to contribute a labor of love to your community. He also taught me leadership, respect for those you work with, and the power of unions- they always protected him and his crew. When he passed, I will never forget, the brotherhood showing up with respect in their hearts for the years my father led them.
I miss you daddy, but hopefully you know that your daughter is still fighting the good fight to make sure all who labor are respected and valued.
In honor of Labor Day, there are no calls-to-actions- except to honor those unsung heroes who labor in our communities.

I believe in the power of the people. I have seen the love and determination of folks stepping up to write letters and postcards to voters, signing petitions and letter campaigns, making calls, sending texts, hitting doors, and dropping literature. There is no power like that of the people, and People Power United stands ready to protect our communities against any and all injustices. - Laurie Woodward Garcia, People Power United
