CNN: Senate Judiciary chair says ‘everything is on the table’ in response to Clarence Thomas revelations: Senate Judiciary Chair Dick Durbin said Sunday that “everything is on the table” as the panel scrutinizes new ethics concerns around Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. “The bottom line is this: Everything is on the table. Day after day, week after week, more and more disclosures about Justice Thomas – we cannot ignore them,” the Illinois Democrat told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union.”
The New York Times: In Trump Case, Bragg Pursues a Common Charge With a Rarely Used Strategy: A lawyer was accused of stealing $1.2 million from his law firm and covering it up. An insurance broker was accused of taking $350,000 from a client and covering it up. And a former president was accused of orchestrating a $130,000 hush-money payment to a porn star and covering it up. All three men were prosecuted by the Manhattan district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, and each faced the same felony charge: falsifying business records. The charge, a staple of his office’s white-collar work, can only be elevated from a misdemeanor to a felony if the defendant falsified the records in an attempt to commit or conceal a second crime.
MSNBC: Jack Smith’s tactical misstep may allow Trump to run out the clock in 2024: Any expectation that former President Donald Trump will stand trial on federal criminal charges before the 2024 presidential primary season may have been scuttled by a possible tactical misstep from special counsel Jack Smith. The New York Times reported that Smith’s team has been vigorously investigating Trump’s multi-million fundraising, which was ostensibly intended to finance efforts to uncover fraud in the 2020 election, even when Trump and his team knew claims of fraud were false.
USA Today: Eight alleged fake electors took immunity deals in Ga. probe. What does that mean for Trump?: Eight alleged fake electors who in 2020 sought to cast Georgia's electoral votes to former President Donald Trump instead of Joe Biden agreed to immunity deals with prosecutors investigating the scheme, according to a Friday court filing. The Georgia investigation development comes as local prosecutors continue to pursue a wide-ranging inquiry involving the former president and his allies, election fraud and the electors' roles in casting fake Trump ballots.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Lawyers: Shafer broke no laws as alternate Trump elector in 2020:
David Shafer, the chairman of the Georgia Republican Party, was following legal advice and broke no laws when he cast a “contingent” Electoral College vote for Donald Trump following the 2020 presidential election, Shafer’s lawyers say. In a letter to Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, attorneys Holly Pierson and Craig Gillen also said Shafer was relying on an almost identical scenario which played out in Hawaii more than six decades ago and was led by Democrats.
MSNBC: Are prosecutors working with a confidential Mar-a-Lago witness?: It was about a week ago when Donald Trump sent a remarkable appeal to Capitol Hill, begging members of Congress to derail the investigation into his alleged mishandling of classified documents. It sounded outlandish — because it was. In a deeply flawed 10-page letter, the former president’s legal team told lawmakers the Justice Department “should be ordered to stand down.” University of Michigan law professor Barbara McQuade, a former U.S. Attorney and an MSNBC legal analyst, explained soon after how foolish the letter was, adding, “[This] looks more like a PR move on the eve of indictment.”
The Wrap: Fox News, Dominion Voting Settle Defamation Case for $787.5 Million: Dominion Voting Systems settled its $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit Tuesday against Fox News for $787.5 million and a concession of “false” claims, just as the first day of the high-stakes trial was about to get interesting. A jury of 12 had barley been seated in Delaware when Judge Eric Davis announced that “the parties have resolved their case.” He did not elaborate before dismissing everyone.
The Hill: Opinion: There’s only one way to fix gerrymandering (and it’s not through the courts): In an about-face last week, with a newly elected Republican majority, the North Carolina Supreme Court cleared the way for the Republican-controlled state legislature to further gerrymander its state and congressional districts, reversing a recent ruling. New maps will likely transfer four more House seats to Republicans (for a total of 11 of 14), despite the state’s nearly even partisan leaning.
Washington Examiner: Seven cases to watch as Supreme Court session nears its end: Until now, the Supreme Court has been handing down decisions at a historically slow rate this session, but that will soon change as it filters through its outstanding cases ahead of the summer. A large collection of hot-button cases remain on the docket encompassing everything from immigration and student loans to same-sex weddings and affirmative action. Now that the high court has wrapped up its oral arguments, it will begin unfurling those outstanding decisions over the coming weeks.
