Hey, quick question. Do you always speak out against racism, xenophobia, islamophobia, anti-semitism, homophobia, misogyny, sizeism, ageism, ableism, elitism, and bigotry?
I want to address an injustice I keep encountering regarding President Joe Biden. We can not purport to be a nation that advocates for some people and not others. Ageism is discrimination, and just like it is entirely unfair to judge anyone on the color of their skin, gender, or sexual orientation, it is also repugnant to judge someone based on their age.
Workers should be hired based on their abilities and potential to do the job required. The same consideration must be afforded to candidates.
Voters should elect leaders based on their skills and potential to do the job. From age 78 to 81, President Biden successfully enacted a bipartisan infrastructure bill, a bill focusing on gun safety, a bill combating climate change, a bill that raises corporate taxes and reduces the cost of prescription drugs, a bill promoting domestic semiconductor production, a bill ensuring marriage equality, and a bill guaranteeing proper care and benefits for our Veterans and their beneficiaries. He has simultaneously lowered inflation, created jobs, driven our economy to unprecedented growth, and strengthened the US position amongst allies.
As voters, we must do our due diligence and examine the health and well-being of candidates. Yes, there is a chance of a decline in the cognitive abilities of an older candidate. Based on Biden's recent achievements, I cannot see any age-related reason to exclude him from consideration as the next President of the United States. If you want to exclude him for other reasons, such as his stance on Gaza or his inability to deal with Republicans on immigration reform, that is your prerogative as a voter. But please do not fall into the trap of supporting ageism while calling yourself an American who believes in liberty and justice for all.
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere… Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly." - Letter from Birmingham, Alabama jail, April 16, 1963, by Martin Luther King Jr.

I believe in the power of the people. People Power United members believe in the possibility of change and work to make it happen. I have seen the love and determination of folks stepping up to write letters and postcards to voters, signing petitions and letter campaigns, making calls, sending texts, hitting doors, and dropping literature. There is no power like that of the people, and People Power United stands ready to protect our communities against any and all injustices. - Laurie Woodward Garcia, People Power United
