Our Circle of Protection: This Is What Solidarity Looks Like
When Trump took office in 2016, life in South Florida changed fast. The cruelty wasn’t theoretical—it was happening right down the street. Half a mile from my office sat ICE Miramar, a facility that quickly became ground zero for family separation and quiet suffering. One Facebook post from a friend asking for help with water and snacks turned into a life-changing call to action. I showed up that first Wednesday, and I have never looked back.
Week after week, we gathered: immigrants in line, families in crisis, and a group of committed volunteers who became known as the Circle of Protection. We brought food, water, diapers, coffee, legal information, and love. We stood in the face of cruelty and met it with community.
And we learned some powerful lessons along the way:
Choose love anyway. Even as ICE shattered families and enabled authoritarianism, we chose care. We ran food and toy drives, offered comfort, and stood in solidarity—not because it was easy, but necessary.
Document everything. The camera became our shield and our witness. Week after week, we filmed not for clicks, but for courtrooms, legal advocates, and public pressure. Documentation is protection.
Back each other up. Someone always had coffee. Another brought snacks. Someone handled the water. No one carried the load alone. That’s how movements survive—by lifting together.
Keep building. One of the most important lessons: never stop recruiting. Every time we shared what was happening, more people showed up. The circle grew. The support deepened. That’s how we win—by multiplying our impact.
Know your power. We made a fundamental change. ICE Miramar has restrooms, parking spaces, scheduled appointments, and water fountains today, as requested. We were relentless, and it worked.
You’re helping more than you know. A family reached out months after our posts. They had followed our updates, avoided harm, and made it through intact. Their gratitude still echoes in my heart. That’s the ripple effect of resistance.
So, if you’re feeling powerless right now, hear this: you’re not. I’ve seen what it looks like to face down injustice. I’ve seen ordinary people become protectors, builders, fighters, and healers.
We protect each other by showing up, telling the truth, growing the circle, and never backing down.

Rather than fixing it through thoughtful policy, Trump and Republicans in Congress have funneled more money into an agency that remains dangerously unaccountable.
From mass detentions to forced deportations, ICE continues to terrorize families and communities across the country. Stay informed, spread the word, and take action. Together, we can expose and stop ICE’s cruelty—and fight for dignity, safety, and justice for all.
A line on a map should never determine a person’s worth or humanity.
To me, it’s just that—a line. And I believe, with every fiber of my being, that anyone who comes to the United States seeking refuge deserves a real chance to be heard, seen, and an opportunity to find safety and hope in the place they hope to call home.
It’s time to speak out, show up, build people power, and get others involved.
