People Power United, it's my birthday week! I am grateful for another year of blessings. When the birthday candles are lit, and I go to make my birthday wish, here is what I will wish for:
That everyone has an opportunity to vote and thrive!
That every day in this community, we speak out against racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, homophobia, misogyny, sexism, ageism, ableism, sizeism, elitism, and bigotry!
Let me send you our awesome People Power United bumper sticker when you become a pledged Substack subscriber for $5 a month. Proceeds help our People Power United efforts.
Facebook must stop extorting me for money so my posts get viewed. (Please share my posts).
Please consider donating to my birthday fundraiser celebrating the Center for Popular Democracy. In many ways, CPD birthed my activism. Wherever there is a fight for rights and freedoms in this country, the Center for Popular Democracy has been leading on the ground to push back against fascism and advocates for an inclusive, equitable society.
Ok, enough with the frivolity. Onwards to the business at hand.
Equal justice is not possible with a compromised Supreme Court
The Supreme Court is supposed to be independent and above politics, but conservatives have stacked the court with political appointees who act on their beliefs instead of the Constitution.
Americans' most significant concerns about the Supreme Court are corruption and ethics scandals, political extremism, and rolling back freedoms. The court appears to be filled with political extremists who are pushing for things like eliminating the federal right to an abortion, undermining our ability to combat climate change, and endangering free and fair elections.
It's time for activists like us to lead the way and champion reforms to the Supreme Court.
Now is the time for Congress to expand the Supreme Court to protect our voting and civil rights, create term limits, and institute a code of ethics. Please take 1 minute and send a message to your member of Congress.
People Power United Statement
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 4, 2023
In response to the Supreme Court empowering former President Donald Trump's campaign for President, People Power United - a progressive grassroots group - issued the following statement:
"Attempting to steal the people's vote is very serious business. People Power United champions the freedom to vote on a daily basis. Voting is how we all have a voice and we all deserve a democracy that serves all of us, not just the rich and powerful.
No one is above the law, and the Supreme Court's ruling today for former President Donald Trump to remain on the ballot and evade accountability for attempting to silence voters and steal their vote is an affront to the Constitution, the rule of law, and to all who call the United States home.
People Power United will continue to push back against injustices and hold our leaders accountable to the people they serve. There is no power like that of the people, and People Power United stands ready to protect our communities against any and all injustices," said Laurie Woodward García of People Power United.
