America: A Work in Progress, Powered by the People
Friends, please take a moment and look at that flag—each stripe, each star, a testament not to perfection, but to the enduring spirit of a nation built on possibility. It is a reflection of who we are at our best: not a finished product, but a work in progress, stitched together by generations who dared to believe in something greater.

This country was never meant to be handed down in final form. As President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”—and time and again, we have proven him right. When tyranny rose in Europe, Americans stormed the beaches of Normandy. When the unknown called from the stars, we sent astronauts to walk on the moon. When a global pandemic threatened humanity, American innovation helped deliver a vaccine that saved millions.
We are builders and dreamers, inventors and caregivers. Like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice”—but only because people like us rise up and help bend it. From Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat to Dolores Huerta shouting “Sí se puede,” our history is shaped by the courage of ordinary people who refused to stay silent.
We are not defined by our darkest moments, but by what we choose to do in their aftermath. We are not a nation that cowers to bullies or bows to fear. We rise. We speak out. We show up. We march forward.
I know that right now, millions of Americans—including myself—are deeply concerned about the impact of these brutal budget cuts. We're already facing skyrocketing costs, unaffordable healthcare and housing, and growing threats to the well-being and safety of our communities.
But I also know this: We the people are stronger than our worst leaders. We will rise above the hatred, the bigotry, and the fear. Together, we will build a nation where everyone has the chance to thrive—not just the wealthy, the powerful, or the privileged.
Our love—for our families, our neighbors, our communities—is what gives us strength. And our values—justice, equality, freedom—are what light the path ahead. That’s what People Power United is about. Not just resisting the tide of fascism, but actively building a future where democracy works for everyone.
That is exactly what the 4th of July represents. July 4th is more than a celebration of independence—it’s a call to action.
In 1776, the Declaration of Independence was a bold act of defiance by everyday people who dared to believe that power should rest with the people, not with kings or tyrants. But let’s be clear: the freedoms proclaimed then were not granted to all. It has taken generations of people-powered struggle to begin to fulfill that promise—abolitionists, suffragists, labor organizers, civil rights heroes, LGBTQIA+ activists, and today’s grassroots movements have all carried the torch forward.
July 4th belongs to the power of the people—the ones still fighting to build a country where freedom, justice, and dignity are for everyone.
This day reminds us that progress doesn’t come from the top down—it comes from all of us - the people rising up, again and again, to demand more of our leaders, and a better community for all.
America is the promise of a better tomorrow—and we are the people who make it real.
Happy 4th of July and keep making good trouble!
We are not just resisting—we are reclaiming, rebuilding, and rising. Let’s do it together.
With fierce resolve and people power,
