Happy Labor Day!
Happy Labor Day
Like every six year old, I thought my father was the coolest dad in the world.
For some reason, my dad took me to work one day (this way before “take your child to work day”), and I had a rare chance to glimpse at his life as a lineman.
I remember we drove for quite a while (out in the mountains of Eastern Washington), and eventually, we stopped. He introduced me to his crew and showed me how to cook my lunch on a radiator, which I thought was the coolest thing until I saw my dad and others scurry up a line pole to work. What an impression that left me!
I saw him through the years go out to work in rain, lightning, blizzards, and every possible weather condition and come home with stories of critters, armed farmers, and his life with his crew. He taught me the value of hard work and what it meant to contribute a labor of love to your community. He also taught me leadership, respect for those you work with, and the power of unions- they always protected him and his crew. Our communities are stronger when workers feel rewarded for their efforts. No one likes to be taken advantage of. Unions make sure our workers are safe and not taken advantage of. When my father passed, I will never forget the brotherhood showing up with respect in their hearts for the years my father led them.
I miss you, Daddy, but hopefully, you know your daughter is still fighting the good fight to ensure all labor is respected and valued.
There are no calls to action today in honor of Labor Day- except to honor those unsung heroes who labor in our communities.

“I also believe that we can move mountains without a bazillion emails asking people for money-which is why our group is powered by people- and not emails asking for money all the time. Our 200,000+ members and our volunteers show up and chip in when it works for them, on their schedule, and with, their resources. And it's working! We've built a home here at People Power United, bringing together folks from all 50 states and even some territories. We're still eagerly waiting to welcome our first member from Guam!”

Thank you, Laurie, for all you do.... and inspire us to do.......and for that wonderful story of your Dad, the lineman. Dangerous work, interesting the details you related. Thanks for that Labor story on this precious Labor Day. Work for Union Labor!, and for those who do not yet have those benefits.
In hurricane country we have a particularly strong appreciation for linemen and all the support it takes to keep up the utilities we depend on. Deepest gratitude to your dad and those like him!
