🧠 RESOURCE: Mental Health Awareness Month
Everyone deserves support. Everyone deserves healing. Let’s use this month to show up for each other—with kindness, with understanding, and with action.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month—a time to shine a light on mental health, break the stigma, and remind ourselves that mental health is health. Here at People Power United we champion progress and power to the people. Good health is an important part of our advocacy!
🌿 Why It Matters
Nearly 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year, but fewer than half receive treatment. Stigma, cost, and lack of access are still major barriers. Mental Health Awareness Month is about:
Educating the public about mental health challenges
Supporting those who struggle—openly and without shame
Pushing for policies that expand access to care, resources, and support

When we talk about mental health openly, we create a culture of care, connection, and courage.
🛠️ Tools to Spread Awareness & Support Others
1. Start Conversations
Ask “How are you really doing?”
Share your own experiences to help normalize mental health struggles
Listen without judgment
2. Use Social Media for Good
Share facts, infographics, or personal reflections using hashtags like #MentalHealthAwareness, #BreakTheStigma, or #ItsOkayToNotBeOkay
Post hotline numbers and support resources
3. Support Mental Health Organizations
Donate, volunteer, or help raise funds for groups like:
NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) – https://www.nami.org
Mental Health America – https://www.mhanational.org
The Trevor Project (LGBTQ+ youth support) – https://www.thetrevorproject.org
BEAM (Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective) – https://www.beam.community
4. Advocate for Access
Call and write your representatives to support mental health funding
Urge schools and workplaces to provide better mental health services
5. Take Care of Yourself
Set boundaries, rest, move your body, eat well, and talk to someone when needed
Therapy, support groups, journaling, meditation, or talking to a friend can all be part of a mental wellness toolkit

Focusing on mental health awareness month, I have become acutely aware of how mentally ill our President is.
Thank you for this! I think my mental health has taken a hit lately, both because of things going on in my life, and because it seems like every day, I read about unimaginable suffering going on in various parts of the world - Gaza, Ukraine, and so on. I get so emotionally tired from carrying the weight of the world, and I'm working on retaining the ability to feel for and with others, without letting it break me down.
