I have so much to share with you about my experience at the Supreme Court yesterday advocating for our rights and freedoms. This Mifepristone case was a farce brought by a fake organization deemed a hate organization by the Southern Poverty Law Center and funded by right-wing white Christian nationalists trying to impose their ideology on Americans. The case was started in Texas with a practice known as "judge shopping" and then landed at the Supreme Court and heard by two justices accused of sexual assault: Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Brett Kavanaugh. It is not the business of the Supreme Court to be a gatekeeper of what medicine your doctor prescribes, the FDA approves, and you or a loved one chooses to use.
This is the same court that overturned Roe V. Wade, has allowed the Texas abortion ban to go into effect, is considering stepping into private medical decisions, and their next case is deciding what happens to you in an emergency room under the EMTALA case.
This court is out of control, and we need Congress to step in with terms, limits, a code of ethics, and an expansion of the court.
Despite the reason for going to DC yesterday, there were lots of bright spots! The number of activists and organizations that showed up for reproductive freedom was inspiring! I had an opportunity to meet one of my heroes - Heather Booth who is a long time freedom fighter and reproductive justice activist. We heard from great speakers like Letitia James and Alexis McGill Johnson who reminded us of what is at stake why we must stay strong. I also had an opportunity to be among people like me who just want better for our communities. I am happy to share with you the message was clear from everyone, no matter what the court decides, we will take care of our communities!
Here are some of my favorite pictures and a short video from yesterday:
Here are some People Power United actions we can take to help push for Freedom over Fascism:
Tell Your Member of Congress: Pass the Women's Health Protection Act and Protect Abortion
Sign the petition: Protect Abortion and Pass the Women's Health Protection Act
Thanks for taking action! As champions for progress, we must double down on our efforts to promote progress, and we have to be willing to get uncomfortable. We must push our leaders to do better in our communities, but we must also push ourselves to talk to friends, families, and people in our communities about issues and voting.
America is brave because you are. And we need that bravery now more than ever.
Did you know?
Did you know that if nothing changed and America elected a Republican President and one more Republican Senator right now, there would be a National Abortion Ban, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid would be slashed, and there would be zero hope for undoing the damage we have done to the planet? In time, there would be mass deportations, a rollback of same-sex marriage, and an assault on contraception and non-Christian religions.
