Voters Must Elect Leaders Who Will Oppose NRA-Backed Project 2025
Washington, D.C. — The Supreme Court’s term began just yesterday, and already today the Court heard arguments in a blockbuster case that could allow even more firearms to flood our streets. Today’s case is a challenge to regulations on ghost guns—unserialized, untraceable firearms that can be assembled at home. This comes on the heels of the Court’s recent decision to strike down a measure banning bump stocks, which enable semi-automatic rifles to fire hundreds of rounds per minute, essentially turning them into weapons of war.
If the Supreme Court rules against these commonsense regulations, it would significantly undermine efforts to control the spread of ghost guns, making it easier for individuals who would otherwise be barred from purchasing firearms to obtain them without background checks or accountability.
United for Democracy Executive Director Stasha Rodes issued the following statement in response:
“Two years ago, MAGA justices on the Supreme Court — including the three appointed by Donald Trump — turned back the clock on our ability to keep our communities safe from gun violence and opened the floodgates to challenge long-standing, common sense measures. This summer, the same justices allowed weapons of war back into our communities by overturning a ban on bump stocks. Today, they took another opportunity to advance their recklessly dangerous agenda.
“It is not surprising that MAGA politicians are turning to the NRA-backed SCOTUS supermajority to do their dirty work, given how unpopular their agenda is. The NRA’s cozy relationship with the MAGA Court will continue if Trump is reelected, and this time the Court will be armed with the NRA-backed Project 2025.
“This first major case of the new term, on the heels of the Court’s refusal yesterday to require Texas doctors to provide emergency abortion care, is a crucial reminder that our lives and freedoms will remain under threat unless we elect leaders who will fight for our safety by rejecting Project 2025, fixing the Supreme Court, and holding the out-of-control justices accountable.”
