People Power United’s statement on the release of Leonard Peltier
🗽A well informed citizenry is the best defense against tyranny.
In response to the pardon granted by President Joe Biden to Leonard Peltier, People Power United—a grassroots organization with over 200,000 members across all 50 states and some U.S. territories, dedicated to championing progress and empowering the people—has issued the following statement:
January 21, 2025
We commend President Biden for granting a pardon to Leonard Peltier, a long-overdue act of justice. For nearly five decades, Peltier has endured the harsh conditions of maximum-security prison, even as growing evidence and global voices have cast doubt on the fairness of his conviction. Esteemed leaders in faith and human rights—among them Pope Francis, Saint Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, and Coretta Scott King—have long called for his release. This moment is a testament to the power of collective action, and I am deeply proud of our People Power United community for standing up, raising awareness, and amplifying the demand for justice. Together, we helped turn the tide toward this long-awaited act of mercy.
