Poverty is a policy decision
The world has enough for everyone's need but not for everyone's greed. -Mahatma Gandhi
This week, the Senate will be voting on the Agriculture Appropriations bill, which includes funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).
The proposed funding from President Biden's FY 2024 budget proposal is $6.3 billion, however, due to the rising cost of food and increased participation in the program, this amount is not enough to prevent 600,000 people from losing supplemental nutrition under WIC. Our coalition partners have organized a WIC Call-in Day to ask senators to fully fund this vital resource for pregnant women and families with young children. Here are two quick-and-easy actions we can take to support folks in our community.
Can you take 3 (three) minutes and call your Senator at 202-224-3121 and ask them protect pregnant women and families by fully funding the WIC program?

I believe in the power of the people. I have seen the love and determination of folks stepping up to write letters and postcards to voters, signing petitions and letter campaigns, making calls, sending texts, hitting doors, and dropping literature. There is no power like that of the people, and People Power United stands ready to protect our communities against any and all injustices. - Laurie Woodward Garcia, People Power United
Our Founders came here with the expectation that the government they formed would exercise responsibility with the six things expressed in the Preamble, one of which was to "promote the general welfare". Poverty was among the things the Founders wanted to solve, because of the average person's resources at a very bare minimum in the country they left for better things. But our government today has become quite a mirror image of the former authoritarian oligarchy they left behind, where rich people's authoritarian demands were much more addressed than what the general population needed. We need to get back to the Founding Fathers' six expectations of government so we can have a much better economy and society, and smarter and more effective international policies.
