Friends, targeting people like those in the Kilmar case is a wake-up call. Whether you're a student, an activist, or simply someone who dares to speak the truth—this administration wants to silence you. Let's be clear: this is a coordinated attempt to erase our history, crush dissent, and weaken our collective power. But we are not backing down.
Power to the People Includes the Right to History
In 2025, the Trump administration launched an all-out attack on truth, racial justice, and the collective memory of our nation. From dismantling protections against police misconduct to whitewashing the legacy of slavery and the Confederacy, the goal is clear: to erase history, silence dissent, and strip the people—especially Black and Brown Americans—of their power.
Trump's 2025 agenda has unleashed a coordinated campaign to erase truth, justice, and Black and Brown identity. In February, his Justice Department shut down the National Law Enforcement Accountability Database—eliminating a critical tool to track police misconduct. Days later, Trump pardoned two officers convicted of murdering Karon Hylton-Brown, a young Black man, as well as dozens of January 6 rioters who assaulted Capitol police. At the same time, his Department of Education halted over 10,000 civil rights investigations. It redirected focus to "discrimination against white students," all while dismantling federal diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. Schools are now threatened with funding cuts for teaching about systemic racism—punishing those who dare to tell the truth.
This assault on history and identity extends beyond policy. Under congressional pressure, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser removed the "Black Lives Matter" mural from a prominent plaza, erasing a powerful symbol of protest and memory. Meanwhile, Trump's Defense Secretary reinstated Confederate base names like Fort Bragg and Fort Benning—originally named to honor men who fought to preserve slavery. Just one year after they were renamed to celebrate American heroes of color, these reversals glorify a whitewashed legacy of treason and oppression. The message is chilling: in Trump's America, white supremacy is not just tolerated—it's state-sanctioned.
Empowering Extremists and Bigots in Government
It's no coincidence that policies like these are coming from an administration staffed by people with openly hostile views toward racial justice. Trump has filled his cabinet and inner circle with extremists and ideologues who have long records of undermining Black and Brown rights and denying racism. As one analysis noted, Trump's nominees are "overwhelmingly anti-Black Lives Matter and anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion"—essentially peddlers of "reverse racism" myths rather than champions of equality. With each pick, Trump has assembled a team intent on dismantling the very policies that support marginalized communities. The people now at the helm of our government are those who see the push for inclusion as an attack on "real" (i.e., white) America.
Consider Trump's new Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth. A former Fox News commentator, Hegseth has "made no effort to hide his disdain for diversity in the military." He has even claimed that racism in the ranks isn't real, complaining that Black soldiers get promoted "simply based on their race." He has echoed the white-nationalist "great replacement" conspiracy theory. This is the man now in charge of the world's most diverse fighting force—a man who derides efforts at inclusion as "woke nonsense." Likewise, Trump's pick for Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, built her political brand by attacking the teaching of America's racial history. She has fought to ban discussions of systemic racism in schools. Noem's agenda, much like Trump's, is to gag any honest accounting of how race and power function in our society. These officials—along with others like Education Secretary Linda McMahon, who has zero background in education but is now charged with enforcing Trump's anti-DEI vision—are not merely "controversial." They are intentional agents of an anti-Black, anti-Brown, anti-truth agenda. Their presence ensures that Trump's regressive vision permeates every policy area—from classrooms to courtrooms.
The implications of empowering such figures are dire. When you staff the government with people who dismiss police brutality, sneer at diversity and idolize a fictional past devoid of injustice, you get policies that reflect those delusions. We are witnessing exactly that. Trump's administration is using its power to embolden racists and silence progress. It's as if the White House has hung out a sign saying: "Open season on the gains of the civil rights movement." But while they hold power, they do not hold the moral high ground and do not have the final say.
Standing Up for Truth and Justice
These developments are alarming, but we must remember that this story is not over. History is written not only by those in power but by those who refuse to accept injustice. The Trump administration's attempts to revive a harmful past have been met with outrage and protest—and that should give us hope. Now is the time for all of us who believe in truth, equality, and justice to speak out, show up, and build people power like never before.
We must raise our voices in our communities, online, and in the streets to denounce these attacks on Black and Brown Americans and historical truth. We must support organizations fighting back in courts and legislatures and demand our elected officials oppose these destructive policies. Most importantly, we must come together in solidarity—Black, brown, and white, people of all backgrounds—to affirm that America's history, however painful, cannot be erased and that our future must be one of justice, not repression.
It won't be easy. The forces trying to turn back the clock are formidable. But the truth is on our side. We know that acknowledging history is the first step to learning from it and that celebrating diversity strengthens us. We know that justice for Black and Brown lives is justice for all lives, moving us closer to the promise of a "more perfect union." In the face of Trump's onslaught, the greatest danger is silence or despair. Instead, let this be our rallying cry: we will not go backward.
Each of us can do something—whether it's voting and canvassing in upcoming elections, writing letters and postcards to voters, attending rallies or protests, organizing a local teach-in about racial history, or simply having honest conversations about what's happening. By speaking out and standing together, we can resist this agenda of erasure. We can protect the progress that generations before us bled for and push forward toward the inclusive, factual, and just America we believe in.
The arc of the moral universe may be long, but it bends toward justice when people of conscience pull it with all their might. Today that means confronting systemic anti-Blackness, anti-Browness, and historical whitewashing. It means telling the truth—in our schools, public squares, and halls of power—even when truth is under attack. And it means empowering each other to continue the fight.
Together, through solidarity and determination, we can ensure this chapter of attempted erasure ends with a powerful reaffirmation of truth. We will remember the names of those lost to police violence. We will keep teaching the real history of America. We will hold fast to the principle that Black and Brown lives matter and that justice must prevail.
In the face of lies and hatred, we will speak out, show up, and build the people power needed to defend the soul of this nation. That is how we honor the past, protect the present, and win the future. The road ahead won't be easy—but if we stand together for what's right, we shall overcome.
