Protect Our Future, Protect Our Power: Say NO to the Big Ugly Bill
A dangerous piece of legislation—H.R. 1 (Senate version number pending), also known by some advocates as the “Big Ugly” bill—is going through the U.S. Senate. It has already passed the House, backed by the same Republican leaders who want to slash health care, eliminate food assistance, and hand massive tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy. But tucked into this sprawling bill is even more devastating: a full-scale attack on America’s clean energy future.
This bill would kill hundreds of solar, wind, and battery projects across the country that are already underway or preparing to launch. It would eliminate funding and tax credits that support everything from heat pumps to solar manufacturing, gutting the momentum of one of the fastest-growing job sectors in the country. If this bill becomes law, over 400,000 clean energy jobs could disappear overnight. That’s not just bad policy—it’s a deliberate betrayal of working families, our climate, and the next generation.
Who Benefits? Not You.
Let’s be clear about who this bill helps. The top 5% of earners and giant fossil fuel companies stand to gain the most. It’s no coincidence that H.R. 1 (Senate version number pending) was drafted with the help of oil and gas lobbyists. Their goal? Strip away support for renewable energy to maintain their monopoly on dirty, expensive power—and keep everyday people stuck paying higher bills.
According to a recent analysis by the Rhodium Group, if this bill passes, utility bills for average households will rise by $400 per year. That’s not speculation—it’s the direct result of slashing the tax incentives and subsidies that make clean energy affordable for homeowners, renters, and local governments. The bill even targets funding for community solar programs that help lower-income families cut energy costs and gain energy independence.
America’s Clean Energy Boom—Under Attack
Over the last few years, the U.S. has made historic progress in clean energy manufacturing. Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act and other recent investments, more than 330 new factories and facilities have opened to produce solar panels, wind turbine parts, EV chargers, and battery components. These facilities bring life back to former industrial towns, create union jobs, and help the U.S. compete with China in a global green economy.
If H.R. 1 (Senate version number pending) passes, those gains disappear. The bill repeals key provisions that provide tax credits and financing for clean energy production. It blocks federal permitting for solar and wind farms. It repeals credits that help build battery plants, threatening U.S. leadership in energy innovation. One study estimates the U.S. could lose $180 billion in private investment if the bill becomes law.
It’s Not Just About Jobs—It’s About Health and Justice
Communities of color, low-income neighborhoods, and rural towns will bear the brunt of this bill. Reversing the transition to clean energy means more fossil fuel pollution, more asthma in children, and more water contamination from oil and gas drilling. Already, Black and Brown communities face disproportionate exposure to pollution from power plants and refineries. Blocking clean energy is environmental racism—plain and simple.
Meanwhile, the Big Ugly bill continues the GOP’s war on people with low incomes. It proposes massive cuts to Medicaid, food stamps (SNAP), and housing support—while giving another round of tax breaks to millionaires. We can’t afford to be silent while this assault on justice, health, and sustainability moves forward.
We Choose the Future
The Big Ugly bill is not just another partisan proposal—it’s a roadmap to economic pain, environmental destruction, and corporate control. But we can still choose another path. We can select a future powered by the sun and wind, not greed and oil. We can choose justice over corruption and prosperity over pollution.
This is the moment. If we act now, we can save over 400,000 clean energy jobs, keep energy bills low, and protect our communities from climate disasters. But we have to raise our voices—loudly and together.
Power to the people—not to polluters. Reject H.R. 1 (Senate version number pending) Protect our clean energy future.
