STATEMENT - People Power United's statement on the appeals court attack on the Voting Rights Act
🗽A well informed citizenry is the best defense against tyranny.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 20, 2023
In response to the recent appeals court ruling which impacts the Voting Rights Act, People Power United - a progressive grassroots group - issued the following statement:
“People Power United stands for transparency, accountability, and holding our leaders accountable to the people they serve. Self government means we the people should always have an avenue to correct an injustice. The latest ruling the 8th US Circuit Court of Appeals is deeply disturbing because it assumes that all agencies are above reproach. The Arkansas State Conference NAACP case was brought to right the injustice of racial profiling and gerrymandering.
Chief Circuit Judge Lavenski Smith was the only dissent and wrote:
"Until the [Supreme] Court rules or Congress amends the statute, I would follow existing precedent that permits citizens to seek a judicial remedy. Rights so foundational to self- government and citizenship should not depend solely on the discretion or availability of the government's agents for protection," Smith wrote.1
People Power United will continue to push back against injustices and hold our leaders accountable to the people they serve. There is no power like that of the people, and People Power United stands ready to protect our communities against any and all injustices,” said Laurie Woodward García of People Power United.
