📢 The Power of the People: Confronting Corruption
This is the moral and civic crisis we face—and it is also the opportunity for renewal.
At pivotal moments in history, the American people have risen with courage to confront corruption, injustice, and authoritarian overreach. Today is one of those moments. And while Donald Trump and his Republican enablers continue to undermine our institutions for personal gain, the people are pushing back—with truth, with courage, and with power.
Corruption in plain sight is still corruption. And the American public sees what's happening. This movement is not just about one day. It's about the deep worry millions of Americans feel about our fragile democracy. It's about a growing awareness that something is wrong when Trump and his Republican enablers are seen by many as profiting personally from government decisions or information and abusing government power to punish critics or reward allies. This is not politics as usual—this is a crisis of democracy, where power is being hoarded and manipulated by a small elite while everyday people suffer the consequences.
Those in Congress who know better are choosing silence over service. Republicans in Congress know better but are too spineless. And what about those closest to Trump? They're widely viewed as "Yes men," putting party over country and loyalty to one man above their duty to the Constitution. That is not leadership—it's complicity. It's cowardice. And it's precisely what we must reject with every fiber of our democratic spirit.
This is the moral and civic crisis we face—and it is also the opportunity for renewal.
We don't need to look far to find the roadmap. Congressman John Lewis walked it before us. He showed us what standing tall in the face of corruption and hate means. His life was a living testament to the transformative power of nonviolent resistance. Whether marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge or fighting for voting rights in Congress, Lewis taught us that change doesn't come from the top down—it comes from us.
And we've seen that truth in action. From people showing up to defend family and friends being disappeared by ICE to the NO KINGS, May Day, and Hands Off national mobilizations, we, the people, have proved that we will not obey in advance. Every time someone takes to the streets speaks up at a town hall or stands up for a neighbor under threat, they are carrying John Lewis's torch. They are making Good Trouble.
And here at People Power United, we are continuing that work. On July 17, the anniversary of Congressman John Lewis's passing, we are joining a national day of action and hosting a virtual rally to honor his legacy and defend our rights and freedoms. Because even as Trump and his allies push voter suppression bills like the SAVE Act and criminalize peaceful protest, we're rising in nonviolent resistance—because, in America, the power belongs to the people.
We will not accept corruption, cruelty, or cowardice as the cost of living in this country. We will speak out, stand up, and rise together.
Let's be clear: this isn't just a virtual rally. It's a moral stand. It's a declaration that the American people will not be silenced or sidelined. It's Good Trouble—alive and marching forward.
Yes, Trump's corruption is corrosive. His allies' complicity is cowardly. But none of that can overpower a determined people who know where real power lives. And as long as we remember where real power lives—in the hands of the people—we will not lose it.
The spirit of democracy is alive and unbreakable. Let us rise for what is right and make Good Trouble together.
