People Power is championing Medicare for All

🗽 People Power United is a grassroots progressive group that shares information and calls to action for our members. Today, we are advocating for healthcare reforms and Medicare for All.

Hey there! As I mentioned a few days ago, I headed to DC to help advocate for the reintroduction of the Judiciary Act and the Medicare for All Act (more on that in a bit), and now I am back home.

I wanted to share that I and other activists were arrested on Tuesday at the Capitol for staging a sit-in to advocate for a clean debt ceiling deal, which would prevent cuts to veterans programs, Medicaid, Medicare, social security, education, child care, food assistance, and would protect millions from jobs lost, rising inflation, and food and shelter insecurity. The debt ceiling crisis is cruel and entirely preventable. Under former MAGA president Trump, Congress gave away tax breaks to wealthy individuals and corporations and helped to drive up our national debt. Now, the same radical Republicans who voted for the spending and giveaways are refusing to pay the bills. America is not a deadbeat nation; we pay our bills.

I am saddened to say that the Capitol police were not respectful and were brutal with folks (they started to drag people away, harmed folks, and numerous other abuses). If they had asked or instructed me to stand up, I would have been happy to comply, but unfortunately, I and others were not given that opportunity and were instead pulled about by Capitol police. After all, we were there only to use the right to assemble and freedom of speech. I am saddened because I believe we are seeing a shift towards fascism, which is often marked by police aggression.

However, I am more optimistic than ever, and here is why:

Yesterday, I witnessed a multi-generational, multi-racial coalition of folks coming together to advocate for liberty and justice for all. I met incredible leaders and everyday folks (moms, dads, abuelos, abuelas, teachers, nurses, and others) willing to advocate for our freedoms and rights. I saw the bravery of folks sharing their stories. I saw passionate speeches from leaders like Representative Maxwell Frost, Representative Cori Bush, Representative Pramila Jayapal, and Senator Bernie Sanders, who are ready to push progress in our nation so everyone can vote and thrive.

I have also seen all of you! Your letters, petitions, calls, texts, door knocks, and advocacy on issues inspire me and everyone else here at People Power United.

Nelson Mandela once said, “I learned courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.”

Let’s rally our courage and continue to advocate for a community where all can vote and thrive!

1. Call your Members of Congress (202) 224-3121 and tell them no cuts and to pass a clean debt ceiling.

2. Please take 1 (one) minute and send an email to tell lawmakers to support: MEDICARE FOR ALL.

3. Please take 1 (one) minute and tell Kevin McCarthy: America pays its bills

4. Please take 1 (one) minute and send a message to tell your member of Congress: expand the Supreme Court to protect our voting and civil rights, create term limits, and institute a code of ethics.
