Today was the 58th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act
We shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. - Martin Luther King, Jr.
Shout out to activists (like all of you) that fight for civil rights and didn’t stop until the Voting Rights Act was signed into law on August 6, 1965.
Since then, the Shelby County v. Holder case along with Citizens United case have set back our civil rights by decades. In the 10 years since Shelby County v. Holder, 29 states have passed nearly 100 voter suppression bills. The ruling a decade ago extolled the same, false post-racial America that the extremists on the current Court clung to in their decision to strike down affirmative action. From Shelby County to today, the Court’s majority claims a “colorblind” world while silencing Black, Brown, and Indigenous voters and closing doors to equitable opportunity.
When you take away someone’s right to vote, you take away their freedom and their voice in our country’s future.
We are uniting for democracy to protect every American’s right to the ballot, and with it, their freedom.
It’s time for Congress to rein in this Supreme Court. Can you take 2 (two) quick-and-easy actions to help push for progress?
