Hey friend,
I know these are heavy times for our country, and probably your inbox too.
Earlier this month, I was on a call with a leading expert on authoritarianism who confirmed what many of us have felt in our bones: America is sliding toward an electoral authoritarian regime.
But here’s what matters most:
We are not backing down. Not now. Not ever.
Despite the passage of this budget in the House and the Senate and the upcoming attacks on our community, People Power United is staying in the fight.
We will keep showing up.
We will keep speaking out.
We will keep building grassroots power that puts people over profit, democracy over dictatorship, and freedom over fascism.
And because we all need hope and momentum right now, I want you to know this:
People Power is on the rise.
Every day, more of us are stepping off the sidelines and into the struggle. And together, we’re proving that the power of the people is stronger than the people in power.
Incredible news — People Power is on the rise! 🙌
We know the endless wave of headlines, threats, and attacks on our rights and freedoms can feel overwhelming. If you’ve felt discouraged or alone, please know you’re not. Across the country, more and more people are rising because we recognize that what unites us is stronger than what divides us. We see each other’s humanity. We know that none of us is truly free until all of us are free. And we believe deeply that everyone deserves dignity, respect, and the chance to thrive.
That’s the heart of People Power United.
As people power grows—with new people joining daily and longtime champions returning—I want to take a moment to reintroduce what we’re all about here at People Power United and answer some of the most common questions we hear:
Who’s leading this movement?
It’s a fair question. But before we answer it, let’s ask another:
What kind of country would we be if we forced everyone to worship the same religion, attend the same schools, or cheer for the same team?
That’s not the America we believe in.
Our country is beautifully diverse—racially, spiritually, geographically, and generationally—and that diversity is one of our greatest strengths. That’s precisely why Trump and his allies try so hard to erase it. They fear what they can’t control. They fear a future that includes all of us.
This people-powered movement doesn’t belong to one leader or one group. It isn’t about ego or credit. It’s multiracial, multigenerational, multifaith, and multi-issue. It’s led by everyday people—workers, parents, teachers, students, immigrants, artists, and organizers—united by shared values, not hidden agendas.
We see each other’s humanity.
We believe that none of us is truly free until all of us are free.
We fight for one another because we know everyone deserves dignity, respect, and the chance to thrive.
So, who leads this movement?
We do.
Together.
Because the power has always belonged to the people.
Who leads People Power United?
Laurie is backed by engaged members who share their input through comments, chat, and direct messages—helping her alert our community to urgent issues and powerful ways to take action together. Our social media, postcard, letter-writing, phone banking, and texting teams are powered by everyday people who step up to volunteer and lead the charge for change.
Does People Power United fundraise?
Nope. We are a 100% grassroots movement.
🚫 No corporate donors.
🚫 No billionaire backers.
🚫 No paid staff.
Just everyday people—like you—coming together to make real change.
Still, we’ve helped spark thousands of actions nationwide to defend democracy and fight for progress.
Why?
Because we don’t believe in paywalls.
We believe in people power.
We use free or low-cost tools powered by volunteers who care deeply. But we can’t do this alone.
What can I do right now to help fight for freedom over fascism?
First, let’s be honest: Trump’s slide into authoritarianism didn’t happen overnight.
And while it’s easy to blame MAGA Republicans—and they do deserve blame—this crisis is also the result of something deeper and longer-running: voter apathy, disillusionment, and disengagement over the past two decades.
Yes, money in politics has corrupted much of our system. But when millions of us sat out elections, the result was predictable: bought-and-paid-for politicians filled the vacuum. The fewer of us who participate, the easier it is for the powerful and corrupt to stay in charge.
But here’s the good news: we still have the power to change the course of this country—if we choose to use it.
Here’s how you can help right now:
🔥 Own the moment. Understand that we all have a part in how we got here, which means we all have a role in fixing it.
🗳️ Register to vote, vote in every election, and help elect leaders who champion progress and put people over profit.
📣 Speak out. Sign petitions. Write and call your lawmakers. Make phone calls. Share your story. Use your voice—it matters.
✊ Show up. Join rallies, protests, town halls, marches, and meetings. Democracy doesn’t defend itself—it needs us.
💪 Build power together. If we’re not growing, we’re losing. Talk to your friends and family, organize your community, and invite others in. Every person who calls America home deserves a say in the kind of country we live in.
This is our moment—not just to resist, but to rise.
Why are comments sometimes closed?
Our chat and comment sections are always open to paid subscribers (just $5/ 5/month). We wish we could keep them open to all, but as a volunteer-led organization, we don’t have the capacity to fend off the trolls, bots, spammers, and bad actors that sometimes flood our spaces. When moderators are available, we open comments up—because your voice matters.
How can I make a difference from home?

Good Trouble Lives On: A Day of Action
On July 17th, the anniversary of Congressman John Lewis’s passing, People Power United is hosting a virtual event to honor his legacy and defend our rights and freedoms.
As Trump and his allies push voter suppression bills like the SAVE Act and criminalize protest, we’re rising up in nonviolent resistance—because in America, the power belongs to the people.
This isn’t just a virtual rally. It’s a moral stand. It’s Good Trouble—alive and marching forward.
