📢 Unmasking Fear: Why This Fight Matters to Every American
Masked agents and unmarked vans aren’t about safety—they’re about control and fear. When due process dies, democracy dies with it. It’s time to unmask the fear and demand accountability.

Authoritarianism rarely storms in with a bang. It creeps in quietly, disguised as law and order, wrapped in the language of “safety,” and shielded by silence. Today, it wears a mask. It drives unmarked vans. It vanishes neighbors without explanation.
This is not about our safety. It is about power. It is about whether a government can strip people of their rights, hide its face from accountability, and get away with it. If it can happen to our neighbors, it can happen to any of us.
And that truth should terrify every American.
Masks Protect Abusers, Not the Public
ICE claims masks protect agents. But protection without accountability is not protection at all—it is impunity. Masked men who refuse to identify themselves are not protecting the law. They are mocking it. Even former ICE officials admit these tactics risk inciting vigilante violence as people mistake agents for criminals.
Why the need to hide? Because fear, not justice, drives these actions. Fear of public outrage. Fear of consequences. Fear of being held accountable. A government that acts from fear instead of transparency cannot be trusted to protect anyone’s rights.
Senator Chris Murphy put it bluntly: “Masked officers can be just a cover for illegality and brutality.” When you cannot identify the person dragging a neighbor into an unmarked van, accountability dies. And when accountability dies, democracy begins to die with it.
Not About Safety. Not About Justice.
ICE wants us to believe these are routine enforcement actions. But we know better. This is state-sponsored intimidation. It is psychological warfare against entire communities, designed to make people live in fear of the very government that is supposed to serve them.
And the consequences are dangerous. Criminals now impersonate ICE agents, copying these same tactics to commit robbery, sexual assault, and kidnapping. When law enforcement behaves like a gang, real gangs take notes. What’s to stop this from happening to any of us?
In America, we don’t “disappear” people. That’s the language of dictatorships, not democracies. Yet reports show ICE agents making people vanish—without charges, without explanation, without dignity. Local leaders have called it authoritarian. The New York City Bar Association condemned it as an attempt to “evade accountability for abuses.”
This is not safety. This is fear theater. And it erodes every American’s sense of community, security, and civil liberty.
The Bigger Test: Rule of Law or Rule of Men?
This fight is not about who ICE targets today. It’s about what kind of country we will be tomorrow. Will we be a nation of laws—or a nation ruled by leaders who believe they are above the law?
If due process can be ignored, then none of us are safe. Not journalists. Not students. Not parents. Not citizens.
Courage Means Transparency
If ICE is truly enforcing the law, its agents should have nothing to hide. Faces should be uncovered. Names visible. Authority clearly displayed. Anything less is cowardice. Courage is transparency. Courage is defending the Constitution, not hiding from it.
That is why Congress must act now by passing the VISIBLE Act and the NO SECRET POLICE Act.
The VISIBLE Act, introduced by Senators Cory Booker and Alex Padilla, would require agents to wear visible identification, ban non-medical face coverings, and enforce accountability measures.
The NO SECRET POLICE Act, introduced by Reps. Adriano Espaillat and Dan Goldman, would ban masked detentions, require official insignia, and extend protections to all DHS agents.
As former ICE official Scott Shuchart warned, “As much as the cop in blues is a staple of American life, the masked bandit is a symbol of fear, and having government agents dressed like paramilitaries is un-American.”
The Fight Is Now
History tells us what happens when people look away—when fear replaces freedom and anonymity replaces accountability. We must not repeat those mistakes.
Because no one is above the law. And no one should live in fear of their government.
Cowards hide behind masks. The brave fight for truth, freedom, and justice in the full light of day.
