We can and should inspire people to take action on issues they care about
Shout out to everyone who came out for our events last night!
Shout out to everyone who came out for our events last night! We hosted two events: Progressive Issues Activism (our monthly meet-up) and Letter Writing and Postcards to Voters. Some great questions came up, so I wanted to tackle those today:
Rumor has it the new House Speaker, Mike Johnson, will not certify a presidential winner that is not Donald Trump. What can we do?
If people believe there is little chance of their vote being counted, they will stay home. If we help to promote conspiracy theories or spend time amplifying the dangers that could happen, we are aiding and abetting the MAGA cult. Progress means we inspire people to take action on issues they care about. We must share information and ways for people to take action in our communities. Voting and holding our leaders accountable is one way to make change. We also must work to build up election protection by pushing for the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and we must build up a volunteer base of eyes and ears on the ground that will protect our elections from shenanigans.
Should third-party candidates should be promoted?
It depends. If a third-party candidate (or a low polling democrat) has built the infrastructure, inspired supporters, and can mobilize a third of the electorate, we should support their efforts to get on the ballot. However, if they are looking to get headlines and donations and have done nothing in states to grow support, then no, we should not support their efforts. At this point in history, if you are not actively trying to promote the best candidate to beat Donald Trump, you are part of the problem. Looking at you third-party candidates: Cenk Uygur, Robert Kennedy, and Cornell West and low polling democratic candidate Marianne Williamson.
Should other candidates be on the primary ballot besides Joe Biden?
Absolutely! I wish we had a younger, more progressive candidate than Biden! However, if you read my post about ageism, Voters should elect leaders based on their abilities and potential to do the job. Biden has done a great job and has the potential to do more great things. At this point in history, I do not see any other candidate besides Biden who can mobilize a third of the electorate and has built the infrastructure to take on Donald Trump or another dangerous candidate that the crazed conservatives, MAGA cult, or radical Republicans are supporting. I am still hopeful that a younger, progressive candidate will quickly mobilize and inspire millions, but I am also realistic that our chances of that happening are disappearing.
Lastly, even though I believe Biden has done great things in his first term as president if he is elected again, it will be our responsibility to hold him accountable and push for progress. We must keep the office of the presidency responsible for the will of the people and make progress on issues we care about.
Does People Power United do endorsements?
No, we do the work to push for progressive policies and encourage folks to support progressive candidates. The only exception is our partisan postcard campaigns supporting the progressive candidate once voters have made a selection in the primaries). We may consider doing endorsements next year.
