Why People Power?
Not long ago, someone asked me, "Why People Power and not Democrat Power?" It's a fair question—and as a proud Democrat, I believe we need both. The Democratic Party plays a critical role in shaping policy and resisting extremism. But let's be honest: the party still falls short in key areas. That’s where People Power comes in.
People Power is the engine of lasting change. The energy, passion, and action of everyday Americans drive it. Political parties matter—but movements move the needle. Both are worth fighting for, but it's the people who keep progress alive.
The Party and the People
The Democratic Party is evolving, but unevenly. Some Democrats are fierce champions for progress. Others cling to the status quo or make concessions to extremist Republicans. When local, state, or national leaders fail to fight for the issues that matter most, we the people must step up.
We must organize, mobilize, and hold all leaders accountable—not just at the ballot box, but in the streets, town halls, and every community.
What I Learned in Florida
I saw the power and pitfalls of party politics up close. In 2016, I volunteered for both Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. I hosted Get Out the Vote efforts in Miramar—deep in Florida's bluest county—and expected to be part of a coordinated campaign. Instead, my home became the only campaign hub in the city. Despite substantial Democratic numbers, support was scattered, and leadership was missing.
I later attended Broward County Democratic meetings and saw why: too many local clubs and caucuses weren't growing, inspiring, or activating anyone. They were stuck in a routine—more of a social club than a movement engine. That lack of energy and vision was fully displayed in 2016 and again in 2018.
During Andrew Gillum’s campaign, I had already mobilized 100+ volunteers when the county party chair finally reached out—just days before the election—to ask if I needed materials. The lack of urgency was staggering. Another time, when I was organizing a protest against Trump’s child separation policy, I was scolded for placing flyers on chairs at a Democratic meeting.
"Who gave you permission?" someone asked. That moment said everything. The system was more concerned with hierarchy than humanity.
From Frustration to a Movement
Those experiences lit a fire in me. Power doesn't come from titles—it comes from the people. To build momentum, you need inspiration, action, and growth.
When Roe v. Wade was overturned, our grassroots group didn’t wait—we organized protests that drew over 3,000 people. The official Democratic rally down the street? Just 150. The difference was clear: People respond to passion, not permission.
Protests matter. But movements require more than just protests—we also need strategies, consistency, and coalition-building. Too many groups—Democratic or grassroots—lose their way. They shrink, splinter, or stall out.
That’s why we focused on long-term growth, clarity of mission, and relentless outreach. Today, our People Power spans all 50 states and has over 250,000 members.
And yes—some of those same Broward Democrats are now asking me for volunteers. My response? When you invest in building relationships and empower others to take action, the volunteers will come.
What Comes Next
We don’t have to choose between People Power and the Democratic Party. We need both. One drives policy. The other drives accountability.
