A promise to the children who were taken from their families
I don't know who you are, but you are my child now, and I will never stop fighting for you.
I don't know who you are, but you are my child now, and I will never stop fighting for you.
I wrote those words on Mother's Day in 2019 at Homestead Airforce Base.1
You may not know this, but at the beginning of what I call the Trump kidnappings, there was a group of us chatting about all of sudden the appearance of small children on airplanes with strange men. We were getting reports of them from airports around the country, and somehow, they kept landing in Miami. Eventually, we learned of Trump's family separation plan and the use of Homestead Air Base, which would go on to house over 3000 children.
At Homestead, a small group of resisters continued to show up for months to bring attention to what was happening. We set up ladders to look over the fence, wave to the children, send them air hugs and kisses, and let them know the world was watching out for them. We facilitated marches and rallies. We did everything we could to bring attention to the plight of these children. We even bird-dogged all of the Presidential candidates to visit Homestead (and they did!). Did you know that when a child turned 18 at the facility, they were moved to the adult detention center known as Krome? I do because I did visitations at Krome Detention Center.
When we advocate for Freedom over Fascism, we must heed the lessons of the past. Trump had no problem separating thousands of families. If elected President again, I fear he will expand his cruelty.
There is another lesson we can see in the photos below.
Hope. Love. Community.
The hope, love, and community we had in those troubling times still power me to keep advocating for progress.
I see a small but mighty group of people coming together with purpose.
I saw community members with love coming from all over the US to stand up and protect these children, standing up against one of the most horrific actions ever taken by a sitting US president.
We must continue to advocate for immigration reform, reuniting families, and work to ensure that such events do not occur again.
As I said initially, I don't know who you are, but you are my child now, and I will never stop fighting for you.
