It’s hard to believe this was five years ago. Back then, we had no idea that Congress’s lack of courage on impeachment of Trump 1.0 would snowball into today’s full-on assault on our democracy.
These photos popped up on my Facebook yesterday, reminding me of what I wrote after leaving sunny South Florida to spend a month in Salt Lake City pushing Senator Romney to vote for witnesses and impeachment in Trump’s impeachment trial (which he did!).
Here is what I wrote:
I am heading home.
After being gone for a month.
I left behind my family and my community.
I came to nudge Senator Mitt Romney to vote for witnesses in the impeachment proceedings for President Trump.
I have learned over the past few years there are people who will always fight for justice despite challenges and then there are people who are excuse makers and whiners. And there are people who justify their complicity and lack of action by ignoring facts.
No one can impose their racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, homophobia, misogyny, sexism, ageism, ableism, sizeism, transphobia, misogynoir, elitism, and bigotry on us.
I don't know what will happen today in the Senate, but I do know this, we put it all on the line.
And whatever happens, we will always show up. And we won't be complicit.
Five years later, we face even greater threats. Convicted 34-time felon President Trump and MAGA Republicans are not interested in representing us—they want to rule over us.
I am going to say this again: No one can impose their racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, homophobia, misogyny, sexism, ageism, ableism, sizeism, transphobia, misogynoir, elitism, and bigotry on us.
We will not obey.
We won’t cower to bullies or fools.
We will do the work to remove them from power.
These are troubling times, but never forget—we are not alone, we have power, and every action we take matters.

I have some questions.
I understand that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has halted much of its work to investigate and penalize corporate wrongdoing. Wasn’t the CFPB authorized and funded by Congress? If so, does President Trump have the authority to halt much of its work and effectively disband it? Is a group of lawyers (e.g., the ACLU or the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law) planning to file a lawsuit? If they are requesting contributions, can you provide to all your readers the name of the group and the address to which donations can be mailed?
