📢 Every day heroes
A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles. - Christopher Reeves
Freedom Over Fascism
It might seem that America has lost its heroes, but I would argue differently. Today, we memorialize the 80th anniversary of the Normandy D-Day invasion. One hundred sixty thousand troops, six thousand ships and landing vessels, and 13,000 support aircraft stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, in what was the beginning of pushing back against the NAZI invasion of Europe. They came from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Australia and Canada.
A hero understands that with great privilege comes responsibility. Our nation, our rights and freedoms, are a direct descendant of the heroes who acted that day on a beach in France. Neither you nor I will meet them, but their impact lives on for generations. They saw something, and they did something.
What did they see?
Holocaust and Genocide - 6 million Jews were systematically murdered, along with millions of others, including Romani people, disabled individuals, political dissidents, and other marginalized groups.
Human Rights Violations - Nazis used concentration camps, forced labor, medical experimentation on prisoners, and severe repression of free speech and political opposition to violate human rights.
Economic and Social ruin - Nazi policies caused widespread famine, homelessness, and the displacement of millions.
A hero does what must be done and seeks no other validation. They are selfless, seeking no glory or limelight. They see a problem and jump in to fix it. They make our lives better just by doing.
While not perfect, our flag represents a promise to do better for our rights and freedoms. It is also a reminder of the sacrifices many have made for our rights and freedoms. It reminds me that freedom is a daily act of advocacy and holding leaders accountable to the will of the people.
Every day in America and around the world, there are heroes that we will never meet, but they, too, protect our rights and freedoms. It might be the soldier standing guard at a base in Poland, an election official working in Georgia, or a whistleblower sharing a photo of a corrupt Supreme Court justice. It might also be a jury member sitting on a case against a former United States President, a former white house official speaking out against the dangers of a demagogue, or a media personality like Rachel Maddow or Lawrence O'Donnell who digs deep to reveal the underbelly of fascism taking root in America.
Heroes don’t just complain, they do something!
