America's bullies, aka the MAGA cult, are converging their hatred and bigotry around the immigrant community, non-Christians, poor folks, the elderly, the sick, folks with disabilities, the LGBTQIA+ community, people of color, and yes, people who identify as trans.
Let me say this loudly to the people in the back of the room. We support all gender identities and sexual orientations. You matter. Don't let any fool criticize you. Dale Carnegie once said, "Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain, and most fools do." However foolish these folks are about disliking others, they are also dangerous. Look at your history books, and you will see that othering leads to all things fascist.
We must push back against all attempts to divide us. We must stand united and have each other's backs.
A member and I had a conversation about trans folks1, and this is how it went:
Member: "This seems complicated to me. You know I am for equal rights and opportunities, but how do people reconcile the fact that some transgendered athletes may have an advantage over other athletes because of their previous sex?"
Me: "My position is equity. That argument is unfounded for the most part and continues to perpetuate discrimination [check out this article2]. I do not believe anyone has the right to deny another any opportunity or rights based on how they identify. Other countries lead on this already like Australia....And speaking of biological advantage, some girls naturally produce more testosterone, or have an advantage because they naturally produce less lactic acid, allowing them to run longer distances, for example, without feeling as tired. Should we exclude them from school sports as well?"
Another member shared this: "Trans women have been eligible to compete as women in the Olympics since 2004. Not one has made the team yet."
Everyone deserves to live their best lives in whatever way they choose. Our job as community members is to love and appreciate them for who they are.
There is no power like that of the people, and People Power will continue to push back and actively challenge transphobia and all attempts to divide us every minute of every day.
