Live from Supreme Court: Planned Parenthoods fight for our freedoms

Hi there to all my rowdy friends! It's been a busy week here in DC; I am glad to head home this afternoon. In case you missed it, I was at a press conference for voting rights to stop the SAVE ACT, went to the rally for Trans Day of Visibility, and went to the Senate offices to join pissed-off federal workers who are letting their voices be heard about the co-presidents Trump/Musk using Doge to fire workers needed to service our communities.

This morning, I was at a rally for reproductive freedom at the Supreme Court. There is another attempt to shut down Planned Parenthood and defund its Medicaid funds. And this is on the heels of Felon President Trump announcing he was pulling Title X funds from Planned Parenthood. Oh, hell no.

The Freedom to Be and Make Choices Is Under Attack

Freedomthe freedom to be who we are and make our own choices—is a core value that defines our dignity and autonomy. It allows us to live authentically, pursue opportunities, and make decisions about our bodies, futures, and lives. But that freedom is under coordinated and dangerous attack.

Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and other powerful figures who oppose sexual and reproductive health care are actively working to strip away people's right to make their own health decisionsnot to protect anyone, but to push their own political agenda and impose their beliefs on everyone else.

They are weaponizing vital federal programs like Title X and Medicaid—lifelines for millions—to block access to birth control, STI testing and treatment, cancer screenings, and wellness care. These are not abstract services. They are the everyday health care that people depend on to survive and thrive.

Yet the Trump administration, backed by anti-abortion groups, has targeted these programs to "defund" Planned Parenthood and shut down its health centers—regardless of the harm that will cause.

Let’s be clear: defunding Planned Parenthood doesn't just hurt an organization—it takes away essential care from people who often have nowhere else to go. In many rural and underserved areas, Planned Parenthood health centers are the only source of care for entire communities.

Eliminating these services is not about protecting life; it's about controlling people—especially women, people of color, low-income families, and LGBTQ+ communities.

Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, made the stakes plain in her powerful statement:

"President Trump and Elon Musk are pushing their dangerous political agenda, stripping health care access from people nationwide, and not giving a second thought to the devastation they will cause. We know what happens when healthcare providers cannot use Title X funding: People across the country suffer, cancers go undetected, access to birth control is severely reduced, and the nation's STI crisis worsens. Planned Parenthood Action Fund will fight to restore this funding and keep politicians out of health care. People need affordable healthcare options. This cannot stand."

These actions reveal what this fight is really about—control.

From cutting Title X funds to blocking Medicaid reimbursements for care at Planned Parenthood, this agenda is aimed at dictating where people can go for care, what choices they can make, and who gets to decide.

In a case now heading to the U.S. Supreme Court, the Trump administration and South Carolina are trying to strip patients of their right to choose their trusted healthcare provider through Medicaid—all to score political points with their base.

And it doesn't stop there. Congress is also moving forward with efforts to take hundreds of billions of dollars away from Medicaid, endangering the health and security of millions, just to hand out tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy. Meanwhile, ordinary people—especially those already struggling—are left with fewer and fewer options.

The American people overwhelmingly oppose this cruelty. Nearly 8 in 10 Americans—77%—oppose stripping Planned Parenthood of funding used for birth control access for people with low incomes. That includes 63% of self-identified Trump supporters. These attacks are not about public will. They're about political control.

And they go far beyond the question of abortion. This is about attacking the right to health care itself. About trying to control people's bodies, silence their voices, and rob them of their ability to live freely and safely. It's about removing the freedom to make personal choices and replacing it with government mandates that serve political interests.

Planned Parenthood health centers are trusted, expert providers that serve everyone—regardless of background, income, or insurance status. They meet people where they are and treat them with compassion, dignity, and respect. That's the kind of care every person deserves.

The freedom to make our own healthcare decisions is not negotiable. It is foundational to everything else—our families, futures, and lives.

We cannot let politicians like Donald Trump or billionaires like Elon Musk decide what kind of care people can access or who is worthy of being healthy. We cannot allow them to strip away our freedom and dignity to score political points.

This was never just about abortion. The attacks on Title X, on Medicaid, and on Planned Parenthood make that painfully clear.

This is about control—and the only way we stop it is by fighting back for our rights, care, and freedom to choose.
