Is People Power aware of Patti Smith's rousing anthem, "The People Have the Power!"?
Remember this line? “People have the power to redeem the work of fools.”
Can you imagine the power of bringing Patti Smith live to a venue with a few thousand attendees singing the chorus? And with a young pop singer by her side, singing alternate verses?
If your corresponder is reading this, many people in the UK and Europe are also terrified. Those that aren’t terrified don’t take enough interest in politics to understand the risks.
Putin has said many times that he wants all the territory that was the USSR back. That doesn’t just include Ukraine, but all of Eastern Europe. Since most are now in NATO, that will be a full scale war. The USA had turned to its own domestic affairs when WW1 and WW2 broke out in Europe. If Trump is re-elected, WW3 is possible.
Cities and military bases in the UK are close in these small islands; it won’t take many nukes to wipe out the whole country.
Also, Trump is crazy enough to start WW3 by a nuclear strike on Iran. He is fascinated by nukes, and is too stupid to understand the full implications of radioactive fallout. The Christian fundamentalists that support him actually want to bring on Armageddon and the Second Coming.
There is a saying that WW3 will be fought with nuclear weapons, then WW4 fought with bows and arrows.
Thanks for sharing that perspective. It drives me crazy that sometimes Americans focus only on our country and don’t see the bigger picture sometimes. We must do better. I appreciate you sharing.
Thank you. I did wonder if I’d got a bit heavy with the post, but it is one of the things I worry about.
There is an inherent contradiction in wanting to be the leader of the free world, but saying ‘America first’ at the same time.
My parents lived through the Second World War; Dad wanted to join up but wasn’t allowed as he was a qualified mining engineer so was essential to supplying the coal needed. Mum was still a child and lived in the Derbyshire town of Chesterfield, famous for its crooked church spire. Her father was in the Home Guard, and later wrote about going up the church tower in the pitch black to look out for German bombers heading to Sheffield, where much of our steel was produced. My grandfather on my father’s side fought in the First World War, but I was too young to ask him about it during his lifetime. We never really seem to appreciate such sacrifice until we are much older.

The war in the former Yugoslavia was monstrous; something you can never quite understand from watching TV coverage.
America, and Britain, have been built on welcoming people escaping wars, persecution and poverty. You wouldn’t have to go very far back into family history of many Americans to find someone who came to the US to escape, make a new life, and prosper. Including Donald Trump’s grandparents.

We have to learn the lessons of the past or we are doomed to repeat them. I fear some Americans forget the sacrifices that were made.
