People Power is about us, not me.
The pummeling of Williamson and Phillips in South Carolina (and many more states will follow) confirms one of our biggest challenges in 2024: Me vs. We.
So last night in South Carolina, Marianne Williamson and Dean Phillips, both Democratic presidential candidates, came up short of winning the primary. Combined, they were only able to convince three (3) out of every one hundred (100) people that they were the right choice to lead the United States of America.
A few weeks ago, I received a few emails pushing back against the piece I wrote: "If you think Marianne Williamson or Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has a chance of winning the US presidency, then I have some swampland in Florida that I would like to sell you."1 but I stand by what I wrote.
President Biden alone did not win Democratic nomination in South Carolina. It was years in the making. Foot soldiers for justice have been working hard through the years to build community power. Building community power doesn't happen overnight, and it doesn't happen without coalition efforts. Coalitions for justice include advocacy groups, unions, churches, synagogues, mosques, other places of worship, and the individuals who support them. They work through the years, share values, push for progress, and move their members to take action when the time is right. Biden's win was a win for those community power-building coalitions. Indeed, this was a people power win!
The pummeling of Williamson and Phillips in South Carolina (and many more states will follow) confirms one of our biggest challenges in 2024: Me vs. We. Neither Williamson nor Phillips built up a movement. Yes, they picked up a handful of individuals but failed to inspire thousands to move towards action. They didn't invest years and resources working with advocacy groups, unions, churches, synagogues, mosques, and other places of worship and didn't empower the individuals who supported them.
People Power is about us, not me. That is why we push for the United in People Power United. We will lose our rights and freedoms if we focus solely on our personal needs. We are stronger when we are united and advocating for one another. Our collective efforts are needed to root out racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, homophobia, misogyny, sexism, ageism, ableism, sizeism, elitism, and bigotry.
For all of the Williamson and Phillips supporters who are disappointed, I offer you this: go out and build the power to support your candidate.

I believe in the power of the people. People Power United members believe in the possibility of change and work to make it happen. I have seen the love and determination of folks stepping up to write letters and postcards to voters, signing petitions and letter campaigns, making calls, sending texts, hitting doors, and dropping literature. There is no power like that of the people, and People Power United stands ready to protect our communities against any and all injustices. - Laurie Woodward Garcia, People Power United
