People Power sends a letter to the President condemning the recent United Nations Vote
Please join me in sending a letter to President Biden. Please read the note below, and if it resonates with you, please sign on, and it will be immediately sent to the White House. - Laurie
Dear President Biden,
I am writing to condemn the recent United States NO VOTE at the United Nations1 for a cease-fire in GAZA. 153 nations, including many of our allies, voted for a cease-fire. Reports indicate that 70% of the fatalities in GAZA have been women and children, with more than 18,000 dead2.
A vote against a cease-fire in GAZA is unconscionable.
The argument by your administration and Israel that a cease-fire will only benefit Hamas by allowing it to regroup and carry out fresh incursions is very weak, and here is why:
The United States and Israel have world-class forces. Are you suggesting that at this point in history, the Israeli border cannot be secured by the combined might of these two nations? If that is the case, millions of dollars have been squandered over the past 51 years, leading me to have zero confidence that throwing more money at Israel will help.
A senior UN aid official has warned that half of Gaza's population is starving, as fighting there continues.3 Additionally, there is no current or long-term plan to return the displaced women and children to their homes. Again, this is unconscionable.
I support these seven moral principles4 on the Hamas-Israeli War:
What Hamas did on October 7 was morally despicable.
Hamas’s avowed aim to murder all Jews is morally despicable.
What the Israeli government has done since then in Gaza is also morally despicable.
The murder or kidnapping of innocent civilians is morally wrong.
Israel’s policies toward Palestinians have been segregation and discrimination, based on ethnicity and religion, which are morally wrong.
It is morally wrong to urge genocide against any group — whether they constitute a religion, ethnicity, race, or nation.
All of us have a moral obligation to do everything within our power to prevent and stop all forms of genocide, all killing of innocent civilians, and the promotion of hate.
It is for all of these reasons that I implore you to reconsider and vote for a cease-fire in Gaza.
Sincerely,
