People Power United unequivocally denounces political violence. Thankfully, law enforcement officials have thwarted a second attempt on the life of former President and convicted felon Donald Trump. While we fundamentally disagree with many of Trump's policies, we do not condone violence against him or anyone else.
Political violence, threats, and intimidation have no place in America.
On the topic of threats and intimidation, let's turn our attention to the actions of JD Vance, Donald Trump, and the MAGA movement, whose spread of dangerous racist attacks, rhetoric, and falsehoods is causing severe harm to the residents of Springfield, Ohio.
According to a report by The New York Times, "The local authorities had already debunked the rumors, saying that there had been no reports that pets were being stolen and eaten in Springfield. But in the days that followed Mr. Trump's debate remark, anti-immigrant rhetoric picked up toward Haitians and the city, which has been hit with a string of bomb threats toward city offices, schools, hospitals, and other locations."1
We call on former President Trump, JD Vance, and Congressional Republicans to issue a statement of support for the immigrant community and retract the false story that "Haitian immigrants are eating pets."
Having lived in Florida for over 30 years, including in a county with a large Haitian immigrant population, I can attest to the Haitian community's warmth, hard work, and dedication to family and faith. It's shameful for a former President and a sitting congressman to spread such racist attacks, lies, and rhetoric without taking responsibility for clearing up this dangerous misinformation.
