Can you do me a favor?
For the next 40 years, I’ll ask you to send me a percentage of every paycheck you earn. In return, I promise that when you retire, you’ll get it back—with interest—as your Social Security benefit. Sounds fair, right?
Now, imagine 40 years go by. You’ve kept your end of the deal. Paycheck after paycheck, you’ve contributed. But when it’s time for me to pay you back, I say, “Oops, sorry. That amount I promised? It’ll be less. And those years of support? Also fewer. In fact, down the road, I might not pay you at all.”
That’s not a misunderstanding—it’s a betrayal. And that’s exactly what Trump and Republicans in Congress are doing to the American people. They knew Social Security needed strengthening. But instead of protecting the people who depend on it, they have rigged the system to reward billionaires. That’s not leadership. That’s selling us out.
This Is a Moral Emergency
Let’s not pretend this is accidental. It’s the plan. Republicans have made their priorities clear: serve the wealthy, punish the poor, ignore the working class. They had every opportunity to fix Social Security by lifting the payroll tax cap and protecting benefits. But they don’t want solutions. They want excuses to dismantle what working people have earned.
And let’s call this what it is: an act of violence.
You might ask, “Why call it violence?” Because that’s exactly what it is. The World Health Organization defines violence as “the intentional use of power… against a person or group that results in or has a high likelihood of ... injury, psychological harm, or deprivation.” 1
So ask yourself: How many people will suffer harm—financial, emotional, even physical—if Social Security is cut, the retirement age is raised, or benefits are slashed?
Millions.
This isn’t just a policy decision—it’s a deliberate act of harm and violence. And we must name it.
Social Security Is a Promise—Not a Shell Game
Social Security is a contract between the people and their government. Every paycheck you earn includes a contribution—your investment in a secure future or times of need. But now, Republicans are treating that promise like a con. They’re not cutting spending—they’re cutting us out.
While millions of Americans struggle, Republicans are redirecting our Social Security dollars to fund billionaire tax breaks, an overgrown military budget, and a cruel border crackdown. This Big Ugly Bill isn’t about fiscal responsibility—it’s about robbing working people and the most marginalized to enrich the powerful.
Let’s be clear: our groceries, housing, and healthcare will cost more so their bank accounts can balloon. We all pay. The 1% profits.
Defunding the American Dream to Fund Billionaire Lifestyles
Trump and Republicans claim Social Security is “unsustainable.” But it’s not the program that’s broken—it’s their priorities.
Experts say the bill weakens Social Security by reducing its funding, not strengthening it.
“It’s simply not correct to say that this bill will eliminate Social Security benefit taxes for 90% of Americans,” said Howard Gleckman, senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center. “It’s also wrong to say it preserves solvency,” he added. 2
“Only higher-income beneficiaries pay the tax in the first place,” noted Kathleen Romig, former Social Security official, now with the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. “This so-called benefit mostly helps the rich.” 3
And according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, this legislation moves the projected insolvency date for the retirement trust fund to 2032, from 2033. That means the program runs out of money sooner, and working people will pay the price. 4
You pay in if you’re a teacher, a nurse, or a warehouse worker. If you’re a billionaire CEO, you get a pass.
That’s not reform. That’s economic violence.
While They Gut Our Future, They Fund Oppression
Trump’s MAGA allies just approved a 13% increase in the military budget—pushing it past $1 trillion—and ballooned ICE funding from $10 billion to $100 billion. 5 That’s money that could’ve protected Social Security. Instead, it’s being used to fuel surveillance, mass detention, and militarized crackdowns on immigrants and people of color in our communities.
This isn’t fiscal discipline. It’s economic warfare against the American people.
