Friends, I'm outraged—and you should be, too. This Supreme Court, packed by Trump, is systematically dismantling our rights and freedoms and handing power back to Trump and his allies.1 If you've been watching in anger as our rights are stripped away, you're not alone—and it's long past time we confront what that truly means.
Equal justice is not possible with a compromised Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court is supposed to be independent and above politics, but conservatives have stacked the Court with political appointees who act on their beliefs instead of the Constitution. You can see the makeup of the court in the footnotes.
🔍 Overview
The 2024-2025 term has just ended and unleashed a wave of decisions reshaping rights across immigration, healthcare, education, and executive power.
1. Trump v. CASA, Inc. (2025)
Issue: Blocking nationwide injunctions that shielded birthright citizenship rules
Background: Three district courts in Maryland, Massachusetts, and Washington halted Executive Order 14160, which sought to redefine birthright citizenship.
Decision: A 6–3 ruling limits injunctions to parties in the case—not the entire country—rolled out partial stays.
Impact: Immigrant parents, hospitals, and states face a patchwork legal landscape. Children's citizenship could vary from state to state. Pregnant immigrant mothers and students on visas are plunged into new uncertainty about their children's rights.
2. Mahmoud v. Taylor (2025)
Issue: Should schools allow opt-outs for LGBTQIA-inclusive books?
Background: Montgomery County introduced five LGBTQIA+ storybooks in its K–5 curriculum, then reversed an opt-out policy.
Decision: The Court held that requiring advance notice and opt-out rights aligns with religious freedom—a 6–3 decision.
Impact: Schools may now self-censor. LGBTQIA+ students and families, already marginalized, may see further stigmatization. Administrators face heavier burdens, and diverse stories may disappear altogether—teachers warned of a "chilling message."
3. United States v. Skrmetti (2025)
Issue: Upholding Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for minors clashes with equal protection.
Decision: The Court upheld the ban 6–3.
Impact: Trans youth across at least 27 states are now effectively denied essential healthcare. This decision sets a precedent limiting medical autonomy for all Americans.
4. Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic (2025)
Issue: Can states exclude Planned Parenthood from Medicaid networks?
Decision: The Court ruled states can deny Medicaid funding to abortion providers—even those offering other vital services.
Impact: Millions of low-income women lose access to preventive and reproductive healthcare, triggering escalated disparities across regions.
5. DHS v. D.V.D. (2025)
Issue: Can the administration deport immigrants to third parfty countries without due process?
Decision: Yes—now legal.
Impact: Immigrants can be sent to nations with no ties and possible dangers—totally stripped of judicial safeguards.
⚖️ Broader Constitutional Themes
Judicial Authority Trump v. CASA removes courts' ability to block national policies—delaying justice and diminishing oversight.
Religious Freedom vs. Civil Rights Mahmoud v. Taylor grants religious opt-outs at the expense of inclusive education.
Healthcare Access Skrmetti and Medina restrict care across geography and provider type, intensifying disparities.
Immigration Enforcement D.V.D. consolidates executive control over deportations with reduced judicial review.
These rulings do more than affect individual communities—they strip back structural protections, leaving all of us vulnerable.
🛑 Birthright Citizenship: A Cracked Foundation
The Court's CASA ruling also reverberates through Trump's birthright citizenship crusade:
Future births could be stateless: The ruling enables a patchwork system where citizenship hinges on geography
Court delays tactics: The Court paused implementation for 30 days, stressing it won't decide the underlying legality—but delayed action is already harmful.
Sotomayor blasts the strategy: "The gamesmanship … shamefully … plays along".
A fractured citizenship scheme threatens communities, hospitals, legal frameworks, and children's futures—potentially reversing 150 years of constitutional guarantees.
⚠️ When Rights Are Lost, We All Lose
Unchecked executive power undermines court protections.
Censorship and stigmatization tear the fabric of inclusive education.
Denial of care creates inequality based on place and identity.
Citizenship bans strike at the heart of American identity.
No one is truly safe if some members of our community have right and freedoms and others do not. Our Constitution depends on checks and balances. These rulings rewrite that balance. They fuel division and leave fundamental rights in jeopardy.
True patriotism means defending these foundations—not ceding them.
