BACKGROUND
It's been 100 years since the Equal Rights Amendment was first drafted in 1923.
This amendment seeks to guarantee legal rights for all American citizens regardless of sex. The Amendment States: "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex".
First approved by Congress in 1972 under President Richard Nixon, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) gained ratification from 35 states early on. Decades later, in January 2020, Virginia became the pivotal 38th state to reach the three-fourths threshold for ratification. Now, momentum is building to encourage President Biden to tell Colleen Shogun the national archivist to publish the ERA before he leaves office.
Moving forward, the Constitution should reflect the nation’s future, one in which the United States is a leader—not a follower—on the world stage and where it upholds its central tenet of equality for all, regardless of sex or gender. While often portrayed as a world leader, the United States lags behind the 76 percent of countries around the world with constitutions that guarantee equal rights for women.
According to a 2016 survey commissioned by the ERA Coalition, a whopping 94 percent of people in the United States would support an amendment enshrining gender equality into the Constitution.

This event will dive into the history, significance, current status of the ERA, and how we can all take action. President Biden has the authority, responsibility, and opportunity to institute this critical protection for women, girls, and LGBTQIA+ Americans. For this to happen, we need a mass grassroots movement campaign urging him to take action. Whether you're new to the ERA or a lifelong advocate, this is your chance to learn, connect, and take action. This is one of the most impactful actions we, the American people, can take in these remaining weeks ahead of the next presidential administration.

Agreed--shameful and ridiculous that we haven't passed the ERA by now. Many years ago (1923?) this was introduced--and rejected various times through the years; and here we are, struggling again to give women these essential freedoms: body autonomy and freedom of choice. Very grateful for you and those who are working tirelessly on this, Lisa. This is our strength: coming together, using our voices to connect with those who are representing us in Congress, the Senate and the Presidency. Also, 'do' call for Town Halls, for accountability and discussion about why this is not being done and why women have no representation in our US Constitution. Let the world know how it truly "is" right now in the greatest "free" county in the world. Worth a laugh and a tear and a grieving for our US community.
