I am still weeping for the families and friends of the Key Bridge accident victims that happened a week ago in Baltimore.
My sadness comes from their loss but also the moment we are in as a nation in how we treat immigrants and asylum seekers. In a profound piece written for the Philadelphia Inquirer, opinion writer Will Bunch writes:
"These six workers who perished were not "poisoning the blood of our country,"1 they were replenishing it. This is a moment of clarity when we need to reject the national disease of xenophobia and restore our faith in the United States as a beacon for the best people like [DC bridge worker] Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval. They may have been born all over the continent, but when these men plunged into our waters on Tuesday, they died as Americans...They were doing a backbreaking job at a wretched hour, one many other Americans simply can't or won't do ― all so their neighbors could drive safely to their warm, comfortable office cubicles in the dawn's early light."2
I have never understood the fear people have of people who are different than themselves. I hear a lot from people from all walks of life, and when I ask about their fear, they deny it. The reality is that is exactly what racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-semitism, homophobia, misogyny, sexism, sizeism, ageism, ableism, elitism, and bigotry are - a fear of someone or something.
I recently had a conversation with a long-time friend I had not seen for a few years, and he let me know that he believes only about 20 percent of immigrants are not criminals. I asked what he was afraid of, and he denied it. I also asked him to join me in meeting the asylum seekers who were visiting the ICE facility a half block from his home, and he made every excuse not to join me. My friend has already built a wall and become a prisoner in his own house, overcome with fear of others in his community, and he refuses to help himself.
He tried to tell me how someone died at the hands of a vicious immigrant, and when I interjected that immigrants and asylum seekers have lower rates of crime when compared to citizens, he rebuffed me. His time now is spent in his cell (aka his home) watching Fox, talking to his "buddy" who knows things, and finding ways to justify his fears.
If you are reading this, rest assured we will not live in fear. We will recognize the value of our fellow community members and honor their dignity.
In this community, we will always speak out against racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, homophobia, misogyny, sexism, ageism, ableism, sizeism, elitism, and bigotry!
We will do the work to hold our leaders accountable and will strive toward a future where everyone in our community can thrive.
