We're not going back
Let’s make this clear: We are not going back. If you care about the women in your life—your mother, sister, aunt, wife, grandmother, daughter, granddaughter, or any woman who has shaped and inspired you—then stand with us. Join us in uplifting International Women’s Day, celebrating the accomplishments of women, and fighting against the barriers that still hold them back. From wage gaps to reproductive freedom, we must demand change. The glass ceiling is still intact, but together, we will shatter it.
International Women’s Day: A Call to Action for Equality and Reproductive Rights
International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated annually on March 8, serves as a global recognition of women's social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. It is also a day to acknowledge the continued fight for gender equality and reaffirm our commitment to addressing systemic inequities. The origins of IWD date back to the early 20th century when women around the world began organizing for labor rights, suffrage, and better working conditions. The first National Women’s Day was observed in the United States in 1909, and in 1910, the idea for an International Women’s Day was proposed at the International Socialist Women’s Congress. By 1917, women in Russia staged a mass protest demanding “bread and peace,” which contributed to the fall of the Tsarist regime and eventually led to women gaining the right to vote. Since then, IWD has grown into a worldwide movement for gender justice.
The Ongoing Fight for Women’s Rights in the U.S.
Despite the progress made, women in the United States continue to face significant challenges, particularly in the wake of the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. This ruling overturned Roe v. Wade, stripping millions of people of their reproductive freedoms. As a result, one in three women of reproductive age, along with trans and nonbinary people, are now denied access to abortion care in their home states. Furthermore, over 64,000 women and girls have been forced to give birth after being raped in states that implemented total abortion bans.
The consequences of these bans extend beyond reproductive health; they also have devastating economic and social implications. Women are three times more likely than men to leave the workforce, and they are four times more likely to live in poverty. States that have enacted abortion bans report some of the worst economic indicators, including:
Higher maternal mortality rates
Worse health care outcomes
Economic losses exceeding $101 billion annually
Supporting Women’s Rights: Championing the ERA and WHPA
In response to these injustices, advocacy for legislative protections is more critical than ever. Two key legislative measures that demand immediate action are the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA).
Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)
The ERA states, “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.” While the U.S. prides itself on being a global leader, it lags behind 76% of countries that have already enshrined gender equality in their constitutions. Without the ERA, women continue to face:
Wage gaps and economic inequality
Discrimination in housing, employment, and leadership roles
Higher poverty risks, especially for marginalized communities
Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA)
The WHPA, introduced in Congress, seeks to protect the right to abortion nationwide, ensuring that decisions about reproductive health remain in the hands of individuals rather than politicians. In 2021, under Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s leadership, the WHPA passed in the House of Representatives. However, it was blocked in the Senate by a Republican-led filibuster, despite overwhelming public support.
Holding Leaders Accountable
As conservatives, radical right-wing factions, and MAGA extremists continue their attacks on reproductive rights—including attempts to ban IVF and abortion medication—it is imperative to hold our leaders accountable. If they refuse to listen to the majority of Americans who support reproductive freedom, we must mobilize to replace them. This is not just a political fight; it is a battle for human rights, personal autonomy, and democracy itself.
Honor the Women in Your Life
On this International Women’s Day, take action. Speak up. Advocate for policies that protect women’s rights. Hold your leaders accountable. And most importantly, honor the women in your life—not just with words, but with action. The fight for equality is not over, and we need every voice in this movement. The time to act is now.
