Why We the People Can’t Stop Fighting Fascism
Fascism doesn’t announce itself with jackboots and banners—not at first. It often begins quietly, disguised as patriotism, law and order, or tradition. It creeps in through voter suppression laws, book bans, and attacks on public education. It silences truth-tellers, demonizes the press, and vilifies immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, and communities of color. And it thrives when people stop paying attention.
We’ve seen fascism rise before. In Mussolini’s Italy, Hitler’s Germany, and Franco’s Spain, it grew from political instability and public fear. Each time, it promised strength, unity, and restoration. In reality, it delivered censorship, state violence, and genocide. And while the 20th century gave us a blueprint of what fascism looks like, the 21st century reminds us that the danger is far from over.
We don’t have to look far to see the warning signs today. In the United States, a well-funded far-right movement has laid out plans to consolidate power in ways that would dismantle democracy as we know it. Project 2025—a radical roadmap drafted by former Trump officials and right-wing think tanks—openly proposes turning the presidency into a near-dictatorship. It aims to purge thousands of civil servants, dismantle government protections, defund the agencies that regulate pollution and protect workers, and hand more power to religious extremists and billionaires. These are not hidden goals. They’re publicly documented. And it’s gaining traction.
This isn’t just a policy disagreement—it’s an existential threat to American democracy. And history has taught us what happens when we don’t take threats like these seriously.
Fascism takes root when people are lulled into thinking “it can’t happen here.” But the truth is, it can. It has. And unless we resist—unless we speak out, show up, and organize—it will again.
So why can’t we stop fighting fascism? Because fascism never stops trying to return. It doesn’t take a break while we go about our lives. It’s always lurking—waiting for a moment of distraction, disillusionment, or despair. Democracy isn’t a guarantee. It’s a fight. And it requires constant vigilance.
We fight fascism by defending truth in an age of lies. We fight it by standing up for marginalized communities under attack. We fight it by protecting the institutions that safeguard our rights—from the courts to the ballot box to the free press.
We also fight fascism by learning from those who came before us. From the anti-Nazi resistance to the heroes of the civil rights movement, history is filled with ordinary people who chose to resist oppression rather than accept it. They didn’t have certainty. They didn’t have guarantees. But they had courage. And they understood that the cost of doing nothing was far greater than the risk of speaking out.
That is our legacy to carry forward. Fascism doesn’t need a majority to win—it just needs enough people to look the other way. It wins when we tune out, when we decide our voice doesn’t matter, or when we tell ourselves someone else will fight the battle for us.
But no one is coming to save us. The only thing that has ever stopped authoritarianism is the collective will of the people. We are the firewall. We are the resistance. We are the guardians of democracy.
That means voting like our lives depend on it—because they do. It means challenging disinformation, supporting independent journalism, and defending public institutions under attack. It means refusing to normalize hatred and refusing to stay silent when human rights are being stripped away.
And it means building a country that lives up to its ideals—not just for some, but for all.
The truth is, fascism feeds on fear. But people power feeds on hope. And hope is stronger than fear—when we act on it.
We the people can’t stop fighting fascism—not now, not ever. Because our future, our freedoms, and our very democracy depend on it.
