Hey friends, thanks for your patience—this one’s coming to you a little late. I had a dental procedure earlier, lost a ton of emails (please resend if you haven’t heard back from me), and the nonstop chaos coming from Rubio and Trump on Ukraine, let’s just say… today’s been a lot. But I didn’t want to let the day end without checking in.
We’ll be back tomorrow with Part 3 of our Free Speech series, but I wanted to take a quick detour to remind you: May Day is coming. And it’s not just a day—it’s a call to action.

Why May Day?
Because it's a global day of resistance—born in protest, forged through struggle, and led by workers and immigrants who’ve refused to back down in the face of injustice. This year, it’s more urgent than ever.
Scroll down to learn more about its history—and why we rise together every May 1st.
May Day: A Day of Resistance, Solidarity, and Struggle
May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, is not just a celebration—it is a powerful day of resistance for laborers and immigrants who have fought, and continue to fight, for dignity, fair wages, and freedom. Born from the blood and fire of the late 19th-century labor movement, May Day’s origins trace back to the Haymarket Affair of 1886 in Chicago.1 At a time when workers across the United States were rising up to demand an eight-hour workday, police opened fire on peaceful protesters, and a bomb thrown during a rally led to the wrongful execution of several labor organizers. The crackdown was brutal—but the message was clear: the struggle for workers’ rights would be met with violence, and it would take courage to fight back.
Since then, May 1st has become a global symbol of defiance—a day when working people refuse to be silent, exploited, or invisible. From garment workers in Bangladesh to farmworkers in California, from Amazon warehouse organizers to striking educators, May Day unites generations across borders in the shared demand for justice and dignity on the job. For immigrant workers, the day carries even deeper meaning—many of whom face double exploitation under capitalism and xenophobic systems that criminalize their very existence while profiting off their labor.
As labor leader Lucy Parsons, a Black and Indigenous anarchist who helped lead the early labor movement, once said:
“Never be deceived that the rich will allow you to vote away their wealth.”
Her words still ring true today. The fight for workers’ rights is inseparable from the fight against corporate greed, racism, and authoritarianism.
May Day is our reminder: we are many, they are few. And when we organize, resist, and rise together, we build a future where the people—not profit—hold the power.
