The Authoritarian Playbook in Action: The Case of Mahmoud Khalil

The arrest and detention of Columbia University student activist Mahmoud Khalil by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is a chilling example of President Donald Trump's authoritarian overreach. Khalil, a lawful permanent resident and advocate for Palestinian rights, was taken into custody without due process, targeted for his political beliefs, and separated from his pregnant wife. His detention is not just an attack on free speech and civil libertiesโ€”it is a warning sign for every activist, journalist, and citizen who dares to dissent.

The Threat to Free Speech and Civil Liberties

Authoritarian regimes suppress political dissent to maintain power. Whether by imprisoning journalists, shutting down opposition, or targeting student activists, the goal remains the same: silence those who challenge authority. Khalil's case fits this pattern. The Trump administration has escalated its monitoring and punishment of political speech, particularly related to Palestinian rights while expanding immigration enforcement to intimidate activists, immigrants, and marginalized communities.

By arresting Khalil, DHS sends a dangerous message: advocating for human rights can lead to government retaliation. Who is next if a lawful permanent resident can be detained for his political beliefs? Environmental activists? Labor organizers? Anyone speaking out against government policies?

Weaponizing Immigration Enforcement

Khalil's detention exemplifies how authoritarian regimes use immigration laws to suppress opposition. Despite holding a green card, he was reportedly told his student visa had been revokedโ€”an absurd justification since permanent residency supersedes a visa. This blatant abuse of power exploits immigration law to silence critics and spread fear.

This is not an isolated incident. The Trump administration has clarified that immigration enforcement is a political weapon. Historically, regimes from Nazi Germany to Pinochet's Chile have used citizenship status to control dissent. The same strategy is now being deployed in the U.S.

Universities Must Take a Stand

Columbia University and all institutions of higher learning must protect their students from political persecution. They must:

โœ”๏ธ Refuse cooperation with ICE and DHS when it comes to student activists.

โœ”๏ธ Ban law enforcement from campus without a judicial warrant.

โœ”๏ธ Erase disciplinary records tied to political activism.

โœ”๏ธ Publicly condemn this abuse of power.

Silence is complicity. If universities allow this to happen, they are sending a clear message: speak out, and you could lose your education, your freedom, or even your place in this country.

The Broader Implications

The case of Mahmoud Khalil is not just about one activistโ€”it signals a broader erosion of democracy. The authoritarian playbook of Trump and the Republican Cult of Obedience follows a predictable pattern:

1๏ธโƒฃ Suppress political speech โ€“ Target activists, journalists, and students.

2๏ธโƒฃ Weaponize immigration laws โ€“ Use threats of deportation as a tool for repression.

3๏ธโƒฃ Create a climate of fear โ€“ Make people afraid to protest.

4๏ธโƒฃ Expand executive power โ€“ Ignore due process and constitutional protections.

This is precisely the vision outlined in Project 2025, an agenda designed to cement authoritarian rule. If we do not resist now, these tactics will expand.

We Must Resist

๐Ÿ“ข History shows us that when people stay silent, authoritarianism thrives. But when people resistโ€”when we organize, speak out, and refuse to back downโ€”we win.

So, What Can We Do?

1๏ธโƒฃ Demand the immediate release of Mahmoud Khalil. His detention is unconstitutional, unlawful, and a direct assault on our freedoms.

  • Click here to sign the petition: Free Mahmoud Khalil

  • Click here to send a letter: Demand the Immediate Release of Palestinian Student Activist Mahmoud Khalil from DHS detention

2๏ธโƒฃ Call on universities to protect their students. No cooperation with ICE. No disciplinary records for activism. No more silence.

3๏ธโƒฃ Keep speaking out. That's exactly what authoritarianism wantsโ€”to make us too afraid to take action. Call your Member of Congress: (202) 224-3121 and tell them to advocate for the rule of law not tyranny and demand the immediate release of Mahmoud Khalil. His detention is unconstitutional, unlawful, and a direct assault on our freedoms.

4๏ธโƒฃ Hold our elected officials accountable. This abuse of power won't stop unless we make it stop. Click here to send a letter to your member of Congress to denounce this act of authoritarianism.

Thanks for taking action!

The Power of the People

The government is meant to serve the people, yet we find ourselves under a system that prioritizes billionaires over everyday Americans. We cannot allow Musk, Trump, and the Republican Cult of Obedience to dismantle democracy and strip away our rights. The choice is clear: we either stand up and fight for our freedoms or risk losing everything.

The time to act is NOWโ€”before it's too late. Fighting for democracy means organizing, mobilizing, and using every tool of peaceful advocacy at our disposal. People Power United stands firmly for nonviolent resistanceโ€”through free speech, assembly, protests, and civil disobedience. These are the tools that have shaped History, and they will be the tools that save democracy today.

Grassroots Activism is the Key

Grassroots activism is one of the most powerful forces for change, but it requires all of us to engage. Even small acts of advocacyโ€”signing letters and petitions, making calls, attending rallies or protestsโ€”add up.

The longer we stay on the sidelines, the more power Trump, Musk, and Putin consolidate. We must build people power in every city and every state and take action to replace corrupt politicians with genuine representatives of the people.

By organizing, holding leaders accountable, and demanding dignity, respect, and opportunity for all, we can reclaim our democracy.

โœŠ Together, we winโ€”because when we fight together, we build a future that reflects liberty and justice for all, not just the wealthy and powerful.
